I've just looked back over the admin log - it's growing isn't it? There must be blood in the water...

And to think we used to think cousin MuggyHabby was an Idiot Savant (sans Savant). Humans are easily pleased/impressed - all those years training him in Metallurgy and now he's happy to prod plastic spiders with a stick for 7% of the door takings... Although he tells me he's ordered his new FDL and is dating some "top bird" (literally)...

On a related note: What can be done to re-improve the board's spam protection we already used to have with phpBB2? I guess I'm not the only one noticing a vast increase of registered spam bots since we have the new board. There's a little too much buzz for my taste in the clock tower lately.

I mentioned somewhere else the old system we used to have where members could not post links until a certain time had elapsed/they had made a certain number of posts. Can this not be re-introduced?

Do you mean a Liberian couldn't be interested in golf?

Hm. Makes you wonder why a spambot would choose Liberia as its location anyway. Doesn't really create trust.

I don't see why a Liberian couldn't be interested in golf, per se, but the odds against one of the presumably dwindlingly few Liberians with an interest in golf also having an interest in Oolite start to look unpromising ...

Liberia an unlikely country for forum membership, although not impossible – but the expressed sports interest by itself is usually enough to merit decapitation. A while back all the spambots were keen on volleyball, if I recall ... I presume though all these details are just pulled up at random from a big table of countries, occupations (although sometimes this just gets listed as "employee") and interests – for some reason, with a heavy weighting for the latter towards sports.

Just noticed 16 registered users on the board one is a yahoo[bot], and another is a google[bot]

Kill, Kill, Kill
They will be genuine web-spiders (gathering data etc for Google, Yahoo and other search engines). PHPBB3 shows them when PHPBB2 didn't (at least that's the experience I had on t'other board I mod when we moved from 2 to 3), but they are harmless. They're automagically identified and classed as bots by the BB, but don't have an account per-se.

I doubt they can be "kill kill, kill"'d, at least without setting an admin flag or somesuch to block them for that reason.
