Also nice. :)

Hmmm. There seems to be a common theme of "blue". So, when are we going to see the first set with a different colour?
Not exactly a set, let's say it's a start ;-)

Yes I've been doodling and love the idea of the screen backgrounds when docked etc.. Here's a couple of Mockups I've done. The background is the same for each, as my take is one size fits all, but there's no reason that when I do get around to creating an OXP for these that I can do specific designs for each screen. :D

Anyway click on the images to see them much bigger 8)

Excellent work Deepspace and AC

Hm...it's a bloody wild idea, but could it be able to make images black'n white and tie it to OXPconfig to allow people choose what color they want via it, perhaps using shaders or something?

@ pagroove: nice new laser sound! But don't forget to also make the incoming laser sound less dull.

As per Commander McLane's wishes, here is a backgrounds set for 1.74 that is not blue. Presenting, the Red Set (using overlay image from Svengali's / pagroove's Blue Set):

I presume a green set is next?

Blue suits my eyes best.

I like the way that red background in the first shot really makes the Griff Cobby stand out.

Nice set, a_c.. good choices of images for each screen, too.

nice work, but i can't help feeling some of it is a bit overbearing for the screens. i also presonally would prefer a pic related to the screen : like (say) a vast warehouse interior for the cargo screen; the planetary backdrop ones for the star charts etc.

I agree with KW. The backgrounds should add to the athmosphere of their respective screens.

A_C, you are the master of the screenshot, and these are some very impressing monochrome screenshot artwork. But it's not what I would expect in a set of station screen backgrounds.

I think they also show the reason why blue seems a natural choice as the ambient background colour: red stands out a lot and tends to steal the show.

Oh, and I really like the sun-gone-nova background! Great idea! And should be easily scriptable.

I agree with all of your comments guys. I did not make the set with the ambition to replace any other sets (hey, I'm using the blue one myself), but more to showcase the possibilities of the system and keep McLane happy with an alternative to blue ;-). The truth is that red is not a "good" monitor / TV background color because of its intensity and I thought I'd make this set a deliberately exaggerated one by picking red.

As for the screens, I would love to have some station interiors myself and try to keep the themes as close as possible to the subject titles of the respective screens. Unfortunately, I am not an artist and making such artwork myself is out of the question. Copying others' work might also be a problem due to copyright. So I had to work with screenshots material - whatever available - and IrfanView, MS Paint and a bit of PowerPoint as my only tools.

Anyway, the message is: You have the ability to change the look and feel of Oolite to virtually anything you want with this. Looking forward to seeing the proposals for the rest-of-the-visible-spectrum / multi colored backgrounds. And I'll make sure to leave it to true artists this time :-)

Just download the latest nightly build for Windows and you should be good to go.

I am running Oolite 1.74 various trunk versions - without shaders, detailed planets=on - and planets show up in f7 screen, no problem.

So what size / resolution of picture is the best or most "natural" to go for ?

The provided chart backgrounds seem to suggest 1024x512 pixels ?

I tried to make a screen background of just a labeled grid, so I see what goes where, bt the result was confusing me.
But it was kind of late when I fiddled with it.
