The timings weren't too far apart, so unless I was rather unlucky I doubt it was that.

My machine seems like to be struggling a lot more with OXZs than with OXPs, so it may be the extra overhead of the on the fly decompression perhaps?

Just how low-spec is "low spec" in this case? I'm doubly curious because of my interest in the recent successful porting of Oolite to the Pandora, which is a very low-spec machine.

Acer Aspire One 722 netbook, although mine has been upgraded to 4GB RAM but a 1GHz C-50 processor (the latter being the limiting factor).

It runs 1.77.1 (and 1.79 with OXPs) acceptably well except when really pushed (like when spawning my planetary ring demo, which gives it a few seconds pause) but using OXZs makes it run like a dog. The game takes a few moments to start up, rather than the normal few 10s of seconds.

Could be the overhead of unzipping, though once the game has started it shouldn't need to do that much disk accessing.

What sort of FPS difference are you looking at for OXPs and the same set as OXZs? Does it make a difference which packs are converted to OXZ format? (a lot of the text files are converted and held in memory anyway, for instance). How many OXZs, for that matter - I haven't tested with a huge number installed.

I'll have a look when I get chance - I've just had a HD failure on one of my machines so I need to concentrate on trying to sort that out.

At the moment it's set up with 113 OXZs plus a couple of dozen OXPs. The full list is below, from my latest.log. It's more the massively increased start-up time, when it gets running I think the FPS is roughly the same (from just observation, but I haven't played much with the OXZs installed).

What's the difference in start-up time between a cached and uncached start? If the slowness is what I think it is, startup from the cache should be pretty fast.

New version (1.8.1) for Oolite 1.79. Available from the expansion pack manager.

* Split into two packages: core and resources. Should make updating the beast easier.
* Contract board is now available right from load. Naturally assuming are loading from a bar.
* Offers are now removed from docking. This change required quite a few changes, so please report any misbehaviour. I also had to change the logic a bit to make things consistent. Now you can dock and trade without the bill from the bar. If you look at the contract list, you're charged for the drinks. Various messages on docking that previously threw you to the board now take you to the status screen instead. You can still wimp out from protecting the bar when asked to defend it by ordering a drink.
