So it's not just me.. that word bugs me, too..Cody wrote:maneuvering*

Though my spell-check (UK & Australian English, before you ask) insists it's spelled 'manoeuvring'

<chuckles> Yeah, I tend to use the US English version as it looks a tad less wrong.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

If you want to, you can go the whole hog and slap in the ligature: "manœuvring".
The real pain is that there aren't many good synonyms: steering, jinking, jockeying, navigating, piloting ... none of them quite do the job!

They pretty much are: they're only really used decoratively, now, or for showing off (as above ...).Diziet Sma wrote:isn't it time those things were declared archaic?
Although use of discretionary ligatures is on the up - most annoyingly in body text, because the software lets you do it and lots of people don't seem to know what "discretionary" means ... and before we return you to your regular programming, I'd just like to complain about the increased use of "Th" ligatures in serif typefaces: they're downright unnatural.

Could be worse.. imagine how they'd look in sans-serif..Disembodied wrote:and before we return you to your regular programming, I'd just like to complain about the increased use of "Th" ligatures in serif typefaces: they're downright unnatural.

Elite: Dangerous - and other stuff!
Oh crikey... ligatures now, eh? Like the difference between Ægis and Aegis?
Regular programming? Hah! <changes thread title>

I'm glad about the debug camera - got nothing against external views as long as they can't be used to gain a tactical advantage.
Hearing good things about Wings so far, and mixed reviews of the new ships. Vulture fits its role nicely but is largely considered ugly, while the FDL is good looking and a good fighter but is panned for its crap jump range and possible energy output issues. No consensus on any of this, it's just what I'm picking up from chatter over there.

Wings may well prove problematic for lone wolf players in certain circumstances - we shall see!mossfoot wrote:Hearing good things about Wings so far...

Wings may not be the only problematic thing in solo play...
I just got interdicted by a drop ship armed with missiles and the name associated with that ship is an actual player,,, I looked him up. What is he doing in my solo adventure? The taunts that he threw were not the kind a NPC would use. Keeping my eyes open on all names that interdict me now.

Did it have the CMDR prefix? Only players have that! Perhaps it was that user's KS reward NPC name choice - and some NPCs do throw out taunts.Yah-Ta-Hey wrote:I just got interdicted by a drop ship armed with missiles and the name associated with that ship is an actual player,,, I looked him up. Oh, and there's a surprise! <grins wryly> Elite: Dangerous is coming to XBox One!

Also a hollow scanner blip, which is often the more obvious indicator.Cody wrote:Did it have the CMDR prefix? Only players have that! There are few enough players in Open mode, once you get away from LHS 3447... I'm near Alioth at the moment, and I rarely see another player as more than a blip going the other way through station traffic. None of them have opened comms - or hardpoints! - though to be fair neither have I...

Re: Elite: Dangerous - and other stuff!
OK... I did not see a cmdr prefix.... just the name but why did he show up when I went to the members list and he checked out as a real player... duplication of names? Will I see an NPC called cody or sims or even me? interesting.
as far as hollow symbols, I haven't seen one yet and I have picked up on npc chatter when a hard point is activating and I am about to be gangbanged by 3-4 non friendly ships. I am at DJUAI flying palladium to a point 2 jumps away (+950 per ton) and these communications come when I open up a unknown signal source.
There is so much about this game that seems paradoxical at first.
Thanks for the input about the cmdr and hollow points...
