Everyone has bad mornings. You wake up late, you stub your toe, you burn the toast...but for a man named *****, this goes far beyond a bad day. When he learns that a friend of his is actually an alien with advanced knowledge of *****'s impending destruction, he is transported off the ***** seconds before it is exploded to make way for a new *****.
Name that book and author!

People of Earth are invited to board an alien ship passing through the solar system.
Despite the vagueness of the invitation (one sentence) , a lot of people take the invitation, but once inside, there's no alien welcome committee. They're on their own.

Nope.
A Google-alble detail (I think:)
all the hi tech stuff they took with them to the ship, just stops working. Semiconductors literally turn to dust. Only mechanical stuff (like an old watch) keeps working.

Ouch okay I really don't know. Could be Sugar or Sinclair, and can't find much on female authors on each. Well found a couple of female science fiction authors with the surname Sinclair but their books didn't match what you'd given us... Anyone else have a clue??
