Hmm... I know exactly which author and story this is, but I can't think of an obvious hyphenated word to describe it.

Maybe "word" is the wrong word to use. "Sound" might be better. So the question is: sum up the 1930-31 Pabodie expedition to the Antarctic with one (hyphenated) sound ...

It has been described as "an insidious musical piping" sound ... and it was reportedly heard by earlier Antarctic explorers, too.
