Arhuman,
Do you think it is possible to include a chat client as a module of Elite which could be activated when landing at a space station. The chat will open a windows showing the people present at this station and will allow trading, file sharing limited to oxp (exchanging or why not selling oxp) and chatting.
Possible? Yes. Gonna happen? Not from me. (Also, who’d host the server?)
Maybe talking complete nonsense...

Could the whole pilot-interaction thing be achieved across a p2p network?
-No need for a server
-Plenty of free (GNU) p2p clients with 'chat' facilities whose code *could* be adapted to suit
-Doesn't need to be quick if, as seems sensible, limited to in-station interaction
-The 'Oolite' client could use an extension of the 'Emoticons system' to trigger in-game actions
-This would also open the door to AI characters placed around the Oolite universe by clever coders ( Would be a great extension for .oxp's )

Just thinking out loud.
