Well, maybe the death announcement should be changed to, "Suck space, Commander" ...?
...but maybe with a disclaimer as to any ill effects from ingesting the space bar off your keyboard...

[struggles to remember Speccy Elite] . . . was there a "death screen" on the speccy version or did you just go straight back to that opening screen?
BTW looks a bit odd in reverse video, shame they don't do white on black!

Did you actually read the OP?
Put the comma in where exactly?
In descriptions.plist, right under this comment:-
Code: Select all
// GUI strings common to more than one screen
"press-space-commander" = "Press Space, Commander";
It's the one that appears at the bottom of arrival report screens, etc. You alluded to it in your OP:-
In fact the phrase "Press Space, Commander" is used in virtually all player prompts EXCEPT death.
- but you're wrong, it actually says, "Press Space Commander", unless you've corrected it as I have.

I agree (although I think the comma is for emphasis rather than strict grammar), but I think that Jameson screen is the exception that proves the rule (in other words I hardly ever see it as I load my save file first)
ie. most mission screens get it "right", and I was only making an observation about the death screen in the OP. Good luck getting it changed

And that is found at:
Code: Select all
"gameoverscreen-press-space" = "Press Space";
There is definitely no 'commander' in it, although its most often this line that is referred in messages. Commander is out of the order here. Who or what is he commanding being an almost dead person. Nothing I assume.

When I see "Press Space" I think of it as a rather humorous thing.
After all - you are in Space...
Well... guess it's time for a good Cappuccino now.

Actually, I see "Commander" as a title rather than an occupation, comparable to a ship captain. And a ship Captain is a captain no matter if she/he is currently in command of a ship or not. Strictly speaking, "Captain" is a title (and a rank in the navies, including merchant navies), that refers to the qualification to command a ship.

Press Space Commander is at the bottom of the arrivals/reports screen isn't it?

The reference in Incursio is when Commander Cheyd is shot up by the Thargoids and quips to Rebecca that he 'hit space, commander' as the cockpit exploded. It was a tongue in check reference to 'press space, commander' of course. Rebecca is the 'commander' he's talking to at this point. Not sure if I did this in Status Quo or not, can't remember!
I will admit that I thought that 'press space, commander' was the 'game over' message on Oolite, but it's not. Perhaps it wasn't on the spectrum version either - I'd have to check.
As for the 'Commander' - I've always saw it as a occupation rather than a rank or title. If you're in charge of a ship in Elite/Oolite, you're a 'Commander'; someone who has a ship, no more no less.
Cheers,
Drew.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but do you get promoted to Captain if you have a crew of 2 or more?

It would depend on the ranking structure, I think. "Commander" is a rank in the British Navy, just below Captain ... but I think in the game "Commander" is, as Drew suggests, merely a job description. Wikipedia suggests that "Captain" is, outside of any military system, just an alternate term for "master" or "shipmaster", i.e. the boss of the boat. So you can be a Captain if you want to, instead of a Commander. Of course, there's nothing to stop you awarding yourself any rank you choose, since there isn't any sort of command structure – at least, none that applies to the players – in the game to begin with. You can call yourself Pope if you wish. StarPope, even!

This has got to be one of the slackest discussions Ever.
Tis so long ago I don't care if "Commander" was part of "Press Space" or not.
Simple part is 'Press space' has no quibbles about it.
YOU ARE DEAD
I Think the 'Commander' was just a thought that stuck from long time players.
Back with the BBC I thought it did say commander But then with Oolite?
I killed a commander just to see!
So I hope you feel very guilty.
For the death of a very good commander for your curiosity.
Anyway, To play this game and not see "That Message" without hurt.
Just is not playing.

No real Commanders were hurt in the making of this thread. All resemblance to any real persons living or dead is completely unintentional. APR 20.2%. Real in game footage. Terms and conditions apply.

Drew.
