A couple of clear leaders in the poll now!

I almost had a last minute change of heart when I noticed "The Demolished Man" was on the list - I read it when I was about 12 - I recall being entranced and horrified in equal measure - I'm going to have to steal it back off my dad next time I'm visiting!

"Use of Weapons" is a great book, but "Consider Phlebus" is more clever I think...

I was stuck between Consider Phlebus, Use of Weapons and Player of Games, but in the end I'd agree with Consider Phlebus. But it was a close thing.

Is there a link to view the current results?

Right under the list of titles... the 'Yes, bring that soon to a cinema near me' button.

Very tempted by the two Harry Harrisons' (Deathworld and Stainless Steel Rat) as I am a big fan . I've actually got the entire 'Rat' series in paperback signed by Harrison when I cornered him at a convention years ago.
But for a Movie, it's got to be Ringworld (Larry Niven). It would be visually awesome and could be 'trimmed' to movie length without too many compromises to the story.

I accidentally stole Harry Harrison's parking space at a Star Trek Convention in Blackpool (c. 1996) when dropping some friends off - he was very nice about it and gave me ample opportunity to apologise profusely and move my car - suggesting that once I was a famous author perhaps I could have my own reserved space too...

Well, I went for Lensmen in the end, but Ringworld and The Mote in Gods Eye had me in considerable indecision!

I have never even heard of the current winner, Use of Weapons, or its author, but I suspect that relates to my age, and that most of my SF reading was completed 45 years ago!

The 'Culture' books, from whence comes Use of Weapons, are very good sci-fi... highly recommended.

Indeed they are, and I have read most of his books in the "culture" universe. However, I must say that, some of them are quite eccentric and they are not necessarily a series as such, just set in the same universe.

Certainly eccentric, as are Banks' non sci-fi novels... which are also a very good read.

I might be biased here, but I really liked The player of games as well as Consider Phlebas - Use of weapons would be my 3rd choice amongst the Culture novels... :P

I'm surprised that Against a Dark Background only made the also-rans list... not a Culture novel, but I really enjoyed it.

I'm surprised that Use Of Weapons is at the top - that would be a difficult film to follow. The reverse order of the Zakalwe plot would be a "Hollywood Nightmare" (i.e. something producers would ask to be removed from the concept because the public would find it too hard to follow) but it's essential to the flow of the story.

Consider Phlebas would be my first choice as a film based on IMB's work because the plot is varied, interesting and ends with a HUGE action scene. It's a good introduction to the universe and has lots of characterisation.

However, I voted for Ender's Game as it's one of my favourite novels. Again, strong characterisation and a fantastic plot. Maybe the "Puzzle game" aspects would need to be toned down, removed or at least explained more in a film (because most of it doesn't become clear until the next book).
