If you've earned enough money to buy a docking computer, odds are you are already good enough to dock without. It just removes some idle time from the game. It means that you have more real life time to do the things that actually interest you.
Agreed.. sometimes I don't have time to play for long, so I prefer to use my RL time as effectively as possible.

I read this thread before when I was looking through the murky corners of the forum.

He's right, though. It's still relevant, if one heck of a revival.

Still, interesting topic. Things that encourage me to press shift D:

Lack of playing time.
Chances of getting a cobra in the face.
If I want a challenging dock I'll land at the black monks.
Insanely bulky ship. Kirin and older Caduceus (yeah that says something about my designs probably)

A serious increase in price might be an idea.

Well, as has been said many times about many features in this game, "if you don't like a feature/oxp/whatever, don't use it, or change it to whatever you want." Different strokes for different folks and all that. The fact that everyone can play Oolite in whatever way suits them best is its greatest strength, I think. It's easy enough to remove it from your keyconfig.plist, then you'll never have to quick-dock again...

Had the question been raised when I was around I would have went for leaving fast dock available, its the way I was used to elite working back int he 80's get the S hit the docking key and you're straight in even if there are hostiles around. It seems right to me to leave features from the old days as they were, and add new ones on top. Rather than taking away features available back then.

Its an "option" not forced.

......and some ships, such as TheMorrigan, won't dock manually anywhere -- especially FreeTradeZone & RockHermit (where I do a lot of trading). Neither will it fit into the docking facility using docking computer S-C-R-A-P-E g..r..r..r..i..n..d XPLODD :o

SHIFT D therefore needed for this/these ships just to land at station & trade.

I am not convinced that bad ship design is really a driver for having a feature in the game.

True, but it is a glorious fringe benefit!

SHIFT "D"

This fully automated feature could possibly be made a cost-option, with station debiting one's a/c (funds permtting) for the service, or refusing -- as is the case e.g. when fugitive status.

Or a one off auto SHIFT "D" might be available to buy (like Galactic Hyperdrive)?

But anyway I notice that the survey favours no change.

Docking is always manual when carrying contraband cargoes.

I think this poll result is quite unambiguous:

88% of the people who bothered enough to vote on this want the feature to stay as it is.

Even most dictators don't get that good results in their fake "elections"

So I suggest to let it stay as it is ...
