The performance of the xorg ati opensource source driver has increased a lot in the past year, especially kernel 2.6.37 and mesa 7.10. xf86-video-ati 6.14 have a lot of improvements.

Since you are using ubuntu 10.04 , you probably have older versions of kernel, xorg, mesa , xf86-video-ati etc.

try the oolite material test suite http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Materi ... _Suite_OXP to see how well your system supports the oolite functionality.

I'd suggest trying out oolite with ubuntu 10.10 (or 11.04 when that comes out).

Upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 and using xorg-edgers didn't help with the framerate but at least I now have working shader support.

glad to hear shaders work well for you now.

Your problems with the low full screen frame rate and (iirc) incorrect detection of your monitor resolution probably have to do with the xorg / startup configuration and are imo not oolite related.

2 tips :
- enable KMS
- xorg tends to work best with NONE or minimal configuration.

I'm an Archlinux user, so can't help you much with that on an ubuntu system.
I suggest you check ubuntu wiki and forums.

They work but they don't work well - decals from Griffs ships don't work but I guess I simply have to buy a newer PC / laptop.

KMS is enabled and there's no xorg.conf.
Anyway I'm used to playing it windowed so I'll wait til I have a better hardware.
