Just a thought.... This problem seems to be a regularly recurring one.
By writing such a line in the save file itself, it implicit says that it is officially allowed to edit a save game.
I don't think that will ever happen.

But frankly, if you break your saved game without making a backup, that’s your problem. Protecting against crashes caused by bad data is our problem. Protecting against self-inflicted data loss is not.
