The sales department at Isis Interstellar has certainly got the pre-release publicity machine going nicely.

Don't see why it should put people's noses out of joint - if there's no canon saying, eg, the line ended at the MkIII, then it makes little sense that the line would NOT have been continued and improved as the decades went on.
It's a big Ooniverse. I'm sure some Agricultural Level 1 would give you sanctuary ...

Cheers.

If you want a hand giving it "all mod cons" then I could be persuaded to expand your horizons.

I'm sure for a hand in that Iconic name several other people might risk a line or two of programming. We are after all heading towards "the war" of 49-51

Oops! I obviously meant:

'Orders, which must be obeyed!'

However did they win the war! *tsk* :D

(I probably misremember that one too! :P)

Canon is what you make it, really: nobody's being forced to install or accept anything they don't like. But I suspect the Cobra III is so iconic, and so central to the original game, that publicly declaring something to be its replacement (as opposed to a reworking, like the Cobra Courier or Cobra Rapier) gives ship designers cold feet ... make a Cobra IV if you want to but be ready for canonfire! ;)
I think Cobra IV was mentioned somewhere in Elite/Frontier canon...

Iirc correctly the SuperCobra is described as the Mk4 in its blurb (either the OXP documentation or the ships description in the game).

However, those are two different things. On this very forum, for instance, opinions are clearly divided on the question whether Frontier can be considered canon, as far as Elite is concerned. Elite works perfectly without recognizing Frontier, and some people may think that it even works better that way.
