That is sage advice, and well worth remembering.

I'd like to add, though, that the method described in the post I linked to is perfectly safe* for anyone with the ability to add a line to a text file without deleting, corrupting or otherwise destroying the rest of the file.
Upon restarting your system you get the option of booting with the /3GB switch enabled. So even if your system completely crashes, reverting to the standard setup is just a matter of hitting the on/off twice.

*For certain definitions of 'perfectly safe'. YMMV.
