Uhm... "here"? °points at topic° This is about OXPs.
Yes, it is about oxps. But your hardware horsepower has a bearing on what oxps you can run, and/or how many, without getting framedrops or weird graphical effects. That was my point, see? :)

Not to mention that "addon" is kinda the opposite of "essential".
"Essential" is kind of subjective here. You can play Oolite 'naked' without any oxps, turn on strict mode which disables oxps, or you can download and install a ginormous list.
Whatever rocks your ooniverse. Personally, I fly with the ginormous list option, including heavily shaderfied objects, because I can. :)

Essential isnt subjective. You may prefer a ginormous list, but that hardly makes them essential.

I think its fair to say that there are no OXPs which are essential, but that doesnt mean you should use any, there are loads of great ones.

The snork is as essential as it gets. 8)

As Lingophiliac i feel the need for some clearance:

"Essential" is defined as
1. A necessary ingredient.
2. A fundamental ingredient.

However, to not let this turn into a war...

kneecaps, i found having the fuelstation.oxp combined with the
witchcraft...errrm witchdrive fuel injector ( included in oolite )
as very helpful for beginners, because it allows you to tactically
retreat from a pursuing enemy. without it, you might end up
as a collection of crystalized red drops in space.

I'm still playing Oolite on a single core Athlon (2800+) and FX gfx (5950 ultra)...
Given the (lack of) power of some of my systems, I often think I'm playing Oolite on an Etch-a-Sketch

I did try and boost you up as far as a Vectrex (used to have one of these - thought it couldn't get any better!)

In my day we played elite with unfilled line vectors. And we were happy ;)

On a tiny green line monitor, as well... and we were happy.
