While I can see the realism of it, I'm not sure if I'm all that thrilled by the prospect. 10% is a good percentage, if people want that possibility.
If it were more than that I would make the following arguments. In a cinematic sense, there is something to being able to escape a situation of impossible odds by the skin of your teeth. If after you have made that last minute escape, a ship (or a few?) shot you down anyways, it is very anti-climatic and dis-spiriting. Heading into tough systems, there was always the backup plan that if you really needed to, you could jump out. all you had to do was hold on for those few seconds to the light speed jump and like Star Wars, they were unable to follow you.

Are you asking about Oolite's story or the technical stuff?

As far as the story is concerned, every jumping ship leaves a wormhole.

Technically, however, there is only ever one system existing in Oolite at any given moment. As soon as the player leaves it, the whole system ceases to exist and is replaced by the system the player is jumping into. Therefore no, the player cannot create a wormhole, because there is no system anymore which could contain a wormhole.

It should be easy enough to make the percentage player-adjustable in some way.. via an OXP and OXP-Config. perhaps 8)
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

agree w/ some of the comments about the odds of ships following you. Maybe it could depend on your staus? if you're clean and get jumped by pirates, eg, the chance one of them would actually follow you out his own system should be very slim. if on the other hand you're a Fugitive, the chances some bounty hunter will follow you for the bounty should be far greater - that is, after all, what they do. and the chances that cops would chase you down should be about the same or higher?

IMHO - Police would be less likely. They'd be outside their jurisdiction, and without backup in the event of an ambush. Bounty hunters are more likely to follow as they are paid for your death / capture. A cop is just paid to patrol and doesn't receive any compensation for the death / capture of an individual.

i thought all of space was the cops' jursidiction? GalCop has fighters at each planet but i didn't think they were solely responsible there. the ambush thing is an interesting concept tho!
