I'm assuming the red zone in the speed indicators was there for a reason, possibly because running engines at full speed is a strain. I do wonder if the ship repair script could check for that in determining when to require a refit? IE, if you spend all your time with the engines on full, you require refits more often than someone who kept them in the yellow 90% of the time...

I never understood what the red zone was for, except that it was atmospheric for the last reserve the engine could mobilize. But it never actually behaved that way in any Elite I have played, and de-facto I am always going full throttle.

Oolite NPCs, on the other hand, do somehow put it into effect. Their normal cruise speed is 80% of full throttle, which would be in the yellow part of the scale. They only go full throttle when fleeing from something (provided that they don't use a special AI which makes them go full throttle during normal flight).

Aaannnyway. Getting back on topic :) This Pioneer project looks like it's worth keeping an eye on. I'm still working on more ships for Oolite though. So far it takes me about 2 years per ship!!!

Looked at this tonight.
Very promising. Does anyone know a list of the keyboard commands?

A bit difficult to come back from it when you are used to Oolite

sadly i cannot run it, it requests to terminate the runtime in an unusual way, then prompts me to forward this to the developers...

however... no contact address

here s the details.. translation does not help in this particular case

it ran OK for a bit on Windows7 64-bit, it exited with an error though when restarting a new game for the 3rd time ( i kept crashing into the ground whilst trying every key on the keyboard in sequence hoping to start the engine and fly forwards)
It looks like you spress F5 to switch to 'Speed Control' mode, then holding the enter key speeds you up

Here's a link to the New open-source frontier semi-clone thread on Google Groups. Lots more background info on the project, and possibly a good way to contact the authors!

Interesting....I put a new build up at yesterday (http://nic.dnsalias.com/pioneer.zip - I added the Cobra Mk 3 from Oolite to it) - but not come across the single core issue. Will try and debug that.

Please post your feedback/bugs/etc.

Thanks,
-Nic

EDIT:
http://nic.dnsalias.com/pioneer.exe <--- this version of the exe doesn't have threading enabled, so that might work on single cores. So replace the one in the zip with this one and let me know how it goes :)
