RE; Cloaking device. I have one but have never thought to use it, seems to escape my mind when I get into battle. Not that sure which key activates it for that matter. 'o' I think??
0 (zero) activates and cancels it. Be warned it does use a LOT of energy. Like you, I've found it's easy to forget in the heat of battle, but if you are being attacked on two or three fronts, a good tactic is to cloak, move a bit, target one of your assailants, un-cloak and fire, then repeat this for the other enemy ships. The enemy usually take a second or two to find you and they're usually dead by then if you're quick enough. Also note that you don't score a 'Kill' if you destroy another ship while cloaked.

AH.. '0' Excellent.
Tried it out, great thing the cloak, though in the version I have, fireing on another ship deactivates the cloak.

Possibly what is happening there, is that the energy loss on firing your laser, additional to running the cloak, is bringing your total energy down so that the cloak drops?

The cloak was tweaked a version or two back to make that happen iirc. It's to stop it unbalancing the game (and in a way to parallel the star trek solution).

The current version should automagically switch off when you fire lasers.

I read somewhere that using the cloak gets missiles of your tail, so I tried it.
Whoo hooo, really does work. Not that they red glowing things even flutter the shields, but the hard heads that no matter how many times you ECM them just keep on acoming. Cloak, missile gone.
Best use for the cloak I've found.
