I'm not sure that we know for sure that they are true lasers. It is possible that they just have the name for historical reasons.

For example what we now call torches (flashlights) are hardly torches in the traditional sense, nor is a caravan much like a caravan of old.

What, you know another use for Thargoids? Bookends, maybe? Or getting boy scouts out of horses' hooves?

(Apologies to the "real" Thargoid - my mind was elsewhere and my fingers just did a sort of "global 'search-and-replace" on my second-favourite quarry...  )

I have noticed that when I choose some of the more interesting laser colours, such as clear or black they seem to come out grey anyway.

Purple beam looks nice.

Cyan fizzes up the target well.

... Maybe they ARE lasers, but what we are seeing is an indicator / projection on our HUDs. For OUR lasers.

... but basically we have the same problem for OTHER ships lasers.

In Oolite 1.69 and later, this is any colour specifier. In earlier versions, it must be a named colour. Also as of 1.69, the game requires laser colours to be reasonably bright; if the brightest colour component is less than 0.5, the colour will be brightened.
