Before rushing into uninstalling the autopackage,
which is successfully tested in multiple distros (@Micha: including Jaunty!),
could you please just drag the lower right corner of the oolite window
and resize it?

Getfix, you're a genius!,
Yes, for whatever reason, the second I moved the window the smallest bit, it was completely fixed, Works with all my OXPs and my keychnage.oxp (space bar for laser fire)

short scenario inspired by Getafix

Pirate Captain: Ah space me Boys, this is where a pirate belongs, our piratical ancestors had to endure unspeakable hardships on the oceans, but here is space, there's no air, no one can survive out here.
Pirate: 2 Objects approaching Captain,
Pirate Captain, Ha Booty for the taking, turn on the ID system
Ident System locked onto one small human colonial and one fat human colonial
Pirate Captain :NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!@#$^%^

Before we completely nail this case, could you please post what was
your desktop resolution when tried to open oolite?

I am suspecting something but I need this one little piece of information,
before reporting it for bug fixing.

I am glad I helped! 8)

...and what about the oolite window?
Did it easily fit on the desktop, initially (i.e. before the resize)?

Sorry for the questions, but I am trying to visualize what you saw when you first ran it. :?

simply a quick flash of the HUD and outer space and then completely black within the window. The window covered most of the desktop but it wasn't full screen.
The game options say Full screen 1024x768

It hasn't done it since I changed the window size that first time. Now it just starts up and plays fine with no need to adjust anything.

If you tell me how to do a screen shot in Ubuntu, I'll be happy to send one.

Just hit the "*" (shift+8 ) button and the game will save a screenshot in your save game folder.

In windowed mode I think you can just hit the "Print Screen" button (aka as Prt Scr/Sys Rq) and it'll do a grab of the whole screen window. I'll check this and report back...

EDIT: Yup, if Oolite is in a window then in Ubuntu hitting the Print Screen button pulls up a thumbnail of your current screen and asks where you want to save your screenshot...
