My complaint with missiles is that when you fire one, you lose the target tracking on the ship you fired it at. You have to acquire the target again.

However, the AI ships will often fire a salvo of missiles in less that 1 second and when they don't even have you in their crosshairs.

So why can they shoot multiples at once, but the player can only shoot one at a time without reacquiring? Seems a bit unfair for the player.

Is there some I'm missing?

2 questions about those screenshots:

where did you get the console in the first one?

What ship is that in the second one? EIGHT missiles - WOW!
You think that's a lot, try filling the racks on a B-Wing!!!

Yes, I also find it annoying to lose target lock.

However, a player can do the same as those NPCs - there are upgrades for the targetting system. With them it's possible to lock on missile, then switch to the next missile (without launching), re-aquire the target (or another one), switch to the next missile, ...

Then it's possible to launch all those missiles which have been locked before at once. That approach can also be read up in one of those Oolite novels, IIRC Status Quo.

I have to admit, that I never used this feature for anything aside from cycling through different types of missiles when flying with a mixed payload. However, I don't really use missiles, they miss so often. I fixed the missile AI by adding accuracy 10, which seemingly works well for NPCs missiles to help them hit their targets, but never tried myself. I'm too much the laser & turret type ;)

I really only use missiles in two occassions.

One is when approaching a large group of pirates. If they have one big ship with turrets, I'll fire a couple of hardheads off at him while I'm out of range of the turrets, then go after the smaller ones. Normally this is while doing a pirate hunt for the Galactic Navy.

The other time is doing a random hit, when I find the target and his escorts, I'll fire at all but the primary target. It keeps them occupied, even sometimes encourages them to run so I can concentrate on the primary target.

In both cases I don't really expect them to hit their target, I really just hope it will keep them occupied until I can thin the herd a bit with the lasers.

It would be nice though to be able to fire off two at a time and have real hope that they might actually KILL their target, rather than just keep him distracted for a few moments.

Try this:
Open the file in your folder...something like this:
"C:\Oolite\oolite.app\Resources\Config"
named "shipdata.plist"
search for "ecm-proof-missile" and "missile" and add to both of them
accuracy = 10;

If you are using Vista and do not have the program installed outside the program files folder, this will leave the real file untouched and create an edited copy in the VirtualStore. That's not so nice, as that also stays with the next installation and could cause problems. If you use Vista, it's strongly recommended to install Oolite outside the "program files" folder!

Screet, in your OSE WiP all and any missiles are three times as fast and have accuracies between 6 and 10!

I would have guessed that that should have made a noticable difference for you, I got the suggestion to change that actually from you

Cheers

Yeah, but I'm not always running OSE, my 4870x2 is slower than a laptop with a NVidia Go 7950 when there's much going on. Thus I currently remove it when I'm flying missions...and then I've got missiles which won't hit otherwise. [EDIT: read the NPCs cannot hit anymore.] I believe that this fix should be in for the regular game, aside with Thargoids upgrades for Thargons.

Seems that I will return the 4870x2 as defective next week and switch to GTX295. ATI apparantly has a driver or hardware issue with OpenGL and appears unable to fix it. Those Asus guys appeared helpful, but they didn't come back to me with a solution and when I told them about this laptop running OpenGL much faster than my machine, they stopped answering. Hope they're just too busy searching for a solution, after all, the 4870x2 is very silent...even when it heats up and uses it's fan in DirectX. For OpenGL it just switches to idle mode :?
