If the stutters are really gone then the “Next mythical stable release” may not be so mythical afther all

I don’t think so. What’s the
bug report number?
Lestradae wrote:2. I have the got both energy units issue - what will happen to my game when I load it with 1.72? Will one of the two disappear? Will there be a problem?
You know, I’m not sure. I don’t think the loading code will do anything about it (which I believe is the only case when restrictions are not enforced). If both are there despite the restriction, only the naval unit will function.

I cite:
Bug #14597, was updated on 2008-Oct-02 09:47
Here is a current snapshot of the bug.
Project: Oolite
Category: shipdata.plist
Status: Open
Resolution: None
Bug Group: Gameplay
Priority: 5
Submitted by: lestradae
Assigned to : none
Summary: Shipyard Tech Level doesn`t work
Details: The Tech Level of Equipment Shop and Shipyard is normally specified for a given system, but the setting can be changed for oxp stations.
While this works fine for equipment - i.e. it is possible to buy Tech Level 10 equipment in a TL 5 system - this is not currently working with the ships in the shipyard.
Instead of, say, TL 10 - ships appearing if the example above is reused, a mixture of TL 5 (system) and TL 10 (oxp station) ships do appear, and sometimes only TL 5 (oxp station) ships. That always happened when testing this feature.
I would be happy if someone could fix this, as it would enable ship TL`s to be defined via oxp station, and for example also make possible ships that can only be bought at one specific station in the whole game etc.
For detailed info, follow this link:
http://developer.berlios.de/bugs/?func= ... up_id=3577
And the other topic ...
If both are there despite the restriction, only the naval unit will function.
... will then resolve itself the moment I buy a new ship.
Concerning the shipyards TL, I would be really, really happy if something was done about it. It breaks a lot of possibilities what could be done with shipyards.

I am not having any success with 1.72. I try to run the patch per the instructions and it tells me 'unable to open file'
It runs for a while but it is shakey and often locks, then locks completely.
I will try it one more time, if it is no go I (or if it is go) I will let you all know what I may have done.
I relly want to upgrade because the Random Hits OXP looks to be a perfect addition to the 'verse.

Ah well, back to 1.65.
If any can give me a clue as to where my problem might be please share. It is possible that I am the problem and I am not understanding something.

It may be worth trying downloading and using the full install, rather than the update patch. In any case, if you've still got them, a post of the log file from trying to run 1.72 may be useful to see what's going wrong (under c:\program files\oolite\oolite.apps\logs\latest.log, or change the first bit if you've installed it elsewhere).
Also there is currently a known glitch with Trident Down OXP which can cause crashes to desktop, so if you're not getting success try a vanilla run without any OXPs in the AddOns folder.
But I believe 1.72.1 is due soonish to iron out some of the problems seen with the new release, so if you've the patience it may be better to wait a little.

I have a question that may be a bit daft, but I will ask it anyway...
Can I have 2 versions of Oolite existing on the same PC (i.e. installed to a different directory)? I currently have v1.65 running and would like to install v1.72 to see how it runs on my rather ancient laptop. But I want to leave the 1.65 there initially just in case I need to go back to it.
Also, just wanted to say a HUGE thanks to the devs (and contributors) of this game... I played the original Elite on an old Acorn Electron (way back when) and recently I had been playing the original via an Amiga emulator and always hoped that somebody would release a PC version such as this...
Its brilliant!

It is perfectly possible to have different Oolite versions installed on the same computer at the moment. You can run the installers for different versions and pick a different install folder each time. Just remember that the shortcuts created will point to the version installed last. To run an old version, you will need to make a shortcut yourelf, or navigate in its folder and run RunOolite.bat manually.

You can even install it somewhere portable. For instance I run mine off an SD card sat in a PCMCIA adaptor, which gets ported around between at least three different laptops depending on where I am and what I'm doing.
Saves having to keep multiple installations up-to-date OXP wise, and also having multiple save games on the go.

Thanks for the quick replies... I shall download the v1.72 release when I get home tonight!
