Could you just make the planet super tiny and then place it inside the space highway model thus replacing the planet with a space highway?
I still don't get what you guys mean by "space highway" (I did read the hitch hiker's guide). Could it be a pre-hyperdrive-type of portal that allows to jump back a galaxy?
If so, there could be a gateway activation fee purchasable on a high-tech nearby system, and the reason for it needing a planetless system being that the portal's use generates hypergravity/deadly radiation/subspace tears/spacequakes/singularities/Riemannian geometry breakdown/insert your technobabble here.
