nice idea, don't make it too easy, that would discourage even more players.

you could add some scripted 'advert h8ers'

should have prerequirement, noobs are not the best advertisement.
maybe link it to ups rating or similar. (add a little 'antecedents' variable)

At least require to get a lousy advert-ship- maybe an adder dragging a big sign - bad handling.
Advert shaped ships - a hoopy cola bottle for instance.

you can add a timed factor
-visit at least X systems in Y time , get paid when completed.
-visit as many systems in Y time, prepaid half, get bonus for visits in excess of X.

-fly a hoopy cola advert around in an anarchy system, for z time or meet at least Y ships.
hoopycolaship is not very good at battle, but has nice shields. (give player warning about number of exposures.)

get powerfull shortwave emitor equipment: allows you to do guerrilla advertizing in corporate systems as well as propaganda in dictatorships etc. (dangerous, makes you offender in local system)

another EQ: holoprojectors- now you don't need to downgrade your ship to the advertizement agency's clunker anymore.

hmm wow! lots more good ideas there!

I think I'll try to work out a set of mission types, requirements and rewards based on all the ideas and report back!

All that bit operations look just as described in my C textbook. I probably do not need a Java book at all, and just change the title of my old C-book.
Oh, I forgot to describe the ~ operator, bitwise not. It inverts all the bits of an integer. Only, in JavaScript, it probably doesn’t.
Than "^" will also be a exclusive-or (XOR) in java I assume.
playerEnteredNewGalaxy(newGalaxyNumber)
Very useful. I now constantly compare galaxy numbers on a jump to see if it was a galaxtic jump, in which case I reset almost everything in UPS.

A Java book would be of little help, since JavaScript is a completely different language. ;-)

Yes, JavaScript does use ^ as a bitwise XOR operator.

i'm perfectly happy with bitwise operators, it's the javascript syntax and Oolite commands that'll take some learning.

I don't get the bits-stuff at all.
But discussion of that may be better taken to the java-hut.

Ohhh, I love the idea of specially-shaped advert ships! It's just the kind of humiliating, demeaning job people get lumbered with when they're just starting out (I recently saw a guy at an academic conference, dressed in a bear suit, which was itself dressed in mock-Tudor garb: he was "Shakesbear", some corporate gonk's idea of a hip and funny way to promote Shakespearean texts...).

This would be the sandwich board/Golf Sale Now On end of things, but I suppose the compensation could be that you could do a bit of trading on the side. Due to the basic, not to say cut-price, not to say cheapass, nature of the ship, there might be a reasonable amount of cargo room: 50-60 tons, maybe?

What other novelty ship-shapes could we have? Lave-Fried Trumble Family Bucket shape? (tagline: Does YOUR family eat out of a bucket?) Faulcon-DeLacy Homing Missile shape? (could be alarming to players encountering one of these for the first time) Starbugs Coffee logo shape? (ditto)

a donut. (could be a cool shape regardless, Millenium Falcon style)

an edible poet...I can only think of food items as pop-art adverts. :(

most adverts would probably be better suited as things stuck on top of a ship.

:D Maybe you should go and get some lunch. As for sticking an advertising thing on top of a player's ship, might it be possible to use Dr Nil's "Your Ad Here" terascreens for this?

hmm...not sure.

Could be as added as a subentitiy but only for a single add, IIRC DrNil has seperate entries for each advert.

You'd still need to 'buy' a new ship as EQuipment carried subentities are not (yet) possible.

Ahruman?
Will randomised subentiies be possible in one of the near futures?
(ie have JS or expandable strings in a shipdata entry.)

It would have to be done separately anyway as you'd want to use horizontal adverts only for a ship-carried sign. But it would be handy as a ready-made source of ads.

Yes that's how the player version were done to make it easy for players that bought them to put their favorite ads on the sides. (btw they do have slightly lower energy and no side laser mountings due to the AD-X screens).
