Dangit, just when I started making real money I required a maintenance overhaul.:(

Banged my ship once too many times when docking I presume.

However, I'm making so much now that it didn't take long to afford the overhaul, but it means I'll have to put off all this other stuff just that much longer.

Not servicing your ship may increase the chance of a mis-hap such as a wich-space misjump or a fuel leak. You can get away with this, but DO service your ship before you sell it as a recently serviced ship has a much greater trade in price than an old wreak.

I did service it. What was odd, is right after this the overhaul came up again as an option, and in the very short space of time in between I got into no fights and didn't even ding my ship on docking. Just when I was about to ask about whether it was a bug here, it disappeared.

Anyway, getting lots of money and got a lot of goodies:

- beam laser (FUN!)
- fuel scoops
- E.C.M. system
- large cargo bay
- passenger compartment
- (just now) extra energy unit

Next up: advanced space compass. Looks to be handy...

I'm currently on my first passenger run.

Good luck with that. Seriously.

But don't come crying to me when the 'passengers' demand to be ferried from Lave to Tianve in twelve days for a lousy 3000Cr.

For that kind of money you could buy three hundred of my cute and fluffy Trumbles and give them as gifts to your friends, relatives and general passers-by who you don't even know...

Ignore the rumours about rampant multiplication and the excessive eating habits and their tendency to devour the life support safety monitoring system, instead focussing on the unique patterns in their furs, their enlarged left eyes and mind-sedating calls (<proot> yes, good boy).

Buy Adopt a Trumble today.

While that all sounds fine and good, I hear a better use for them is to stuff them in a cargo container, eject it and use the container for target practise.

I suppose I could also eject it into a star on one of my close fuel-scooping runs...

The Shipyard Mechanics will offer you a service ever so often. They do so based on time rarther than damage you may have sustained. When the option is given, it is wise to take the mechanics advice and service your ship. But you don't have to:-

"See its not your parts its the labour. Your prime motivator has flown 1000 light years since your last service and we'd reckomend you have it looked over."

Its up to you whether you have the service. But things can go wrong with your ship if you don't service your ship regularly. And a badly serviced ship won't get the same trade in value as a regularly serviced one when you decide to sell it in the Shipyard.

In RL would you buy a second hand car with no MOT or service history? Same goes in Oolite. Would you buy a second hand python from Captain H with no service record or MOT, however much he assured you it was a lovely runner and the trumbles in the cargo bay were a "feature"? When you do sell your ship a good service record effects the price you will be given as a trade in.

Hi Fraoch and welcome :D

May I suggest a docking computer, this will speed up your gameplay significantly. You can also increase your earnings by visiting Hoopys Casino and trading selected items there. If you need more cash, once you have docked and sold your cargo, you can relaunch and just hang around the space station and keep your eye out for incoming escape capsules, you get a reward from insurance companies for rescuing, and scoop any loose cargo containers that appear, they show as white blips on your scanner.

Ever since I've had the money, I haven't seen a docking computer. I'm now travelling to systems I wouldn't ordinarily go to since I'm transporting passengers and it's destinations of opportunity as I jump from place to place.

I've never seen Hoopys Casino. I also haven't seen any escape capsules or cargo containers just drifting around - does that happen a lot? Regarding escape capsules, what if I was to scoop up one that shot out of a pirate ship just after I blew it up? I thought about it and for some reason I believed they'd be sold as slaves, which would get me in trouble. So I just shot it down, 'cause the only good pirate is a dead pirate.

HOopy Casinos are an OXP available on the Wiki.

As for shooting down escape pods, shame on you!! There's Galactic Laws covering the murder of people in escape pods. Far better to scoop the pods and (as you do in the game) hand them over to the authorities for a juicy bounty!!(not the coconut-fillled chocolate bar)

Top advice on maintenance overhauls: get them at high tech-level planets.

The obvious trading tip is, of course, Computers for Furs. Made a fortune on those, just two star systems east of Lave.

Fuel scoops: yet another technology I can't afford yet.:)
They're a moneymaker, and in my opinion it should be one of the first upgrades (after the fuel injector and the beam laser, and before the ECM).
I never actually bought the beam laser, went right for the Rear Military Laser (because it is easier to shoot those who are trying to catch me than those who are trying to escape).

Get ECM first, then Fuel Scoops, then save for Military Laser.

Talking of fuel leaks: Is it just a chance that every single time I scoop a fuel tank, my own ship's fuel tank develops a leak and I invariably lose all my fuel?

Is there a way to force rescue? Once in a while I get a slave instead of a passenger and I feel sorry for him (also, he earns me up to 50 times less than a passenger, and I feel sorry about that as well).

I bought a Docking computer and I dont think it saves me anytime at all. Im at the skil now where I can easily fly full speed into the dock without hitting the sides and using the DC seems to take forever as it lines up, circles, speeds up, then slows down etc. Is therereally any benefit to it besides being able to leave the docking sequence running whilst you Alt Tab out of the prog to do other things?
