You still dont forgive me for dobbing you in to Jack Hamilton do you?
@TGHC - Ferdie, Space Tree, it's all the same thing. With occupational-jargon, a single thing can have multiple names. I'm a student nurse and I know several things that have lots of names and lots of abreviations that have new and interesting meaning depending on the specialisation.

Spacer - generic term for a person who lives a predominantly spacebound existence, opposite to a planetbound existence. <EDIT>(attrib. Robert Holdstock) (Sorry A_H, your immortality has been curtailed slightly....)
Commander Muddyboots - also C. Dirteater, C.Groundhugger, derogatory term for a pilot who spent most of their life living on a planet and have taken to the spacelanes, either seriously or simply to say 'been there, done that'. These names are often the cause of fights, both in space station bars and in the spacelanes themselves.
One-Pip Wonder - derogatory term for a Harmless rated pilot, especially one who is apt to tell tall stories.
Shark-boat - Python Class Cruiser, due to the popular shark-mouth paint scheme.

Anything with 'dirt' or 'mud' are derogatory terms for planetdwellers or spacers that still think in terms of two degrees of freedom.
As opposed to acclimatised spacers that think movement in 3 or 4 dimensions.

Some more nicknames:

Wedge - Gecko.
Speedbump - A description for a ship that appears on the edge of your scanner and mass-locks you out of Hyperspeed, then disappears off your scanner.
