I run OOlite on a reasonably high spec lap top and I do get the sticky messages but they clear off after cycling through my fore, aft etc views. Better still they go after using the external view key - its best not to button bash to try and clear messages though as this tends to make them mount up!

I think I've tried every speed, pattern ect. to overcome the sticky message bug. For now I've just given up on playing the game until someone kills it.

I'd rather see the message display removed all together, if there's no way that any coders can make size and placement of the messages controlled by the HUD.plist. I'm sure that I'd die a lot less often from not noticing a missile fired at me, than the many times I've died from not being able to see what's going on because the screen is covered in sticky messages.

As I said before. I haven't given up on Oolite. :D

I just don't care to play it as long as this isn't fixed, and I'm having a really hard time turning anyone on to a game with such a visible bug, which affects gameplay as much as it does.

is it definitely a game bug? ie, not a vid driver bug trying to deal w/ the clever fadey effect? i've never come across it myself, i thought if it was a game bug it would be very more common? i've had other games w/ clever graphical touches that flatly refuse to work properly on one of my machines or the other, and that makes this sound like it's a vidcard/driver thingy getting itself muxed up every so often.

not, y'know, that i'm an expert or nowt :-/

I wouldn't go for removing the screen messages altogether, because in Equilibrium.oxp I use them in my plot. So the player might miss an important information about where to go next if they weren't there. They are the only way of (sort of, because the player can't send messages, which would be REALLY cool!) plot-interaction when not docked, so I definetely would not want to miss them.

But of course it's an annoying bug that should be fixed.

There ought to be an insignificant Coms display panel somewhere on the HUD where all the prompts and messages appear along with an audio message, that could be turned on or off, you'd get all the info and it wouldn't interfere with the field of view of the pilot.
As it is now, it is a mild irritant, and inconvenient in battle mode, but it certainly won't stop me from playing.

You think you have problems! Yesterday I was just about to vaporise the last of a pack of 8 scurvy-pirate-dogs and my screen was completely obscured by Bruno (I should explain that Bruno is my cat). At least the messages mean you can see some of the screen, no amount of F3, F4, F5 will get rid of Bruno. My last thought as I met head-to-head with an ECM hardened missiles was wondering why my cat dribbles when he purrs: funny how life is sometimes.

OUCH for your keyboard? Hopefully not! (My wife once killed the screen of HER laptop by sneezing on it! (not related to my current problems with the screen of MY laptop! (see this thread: https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.php?t=2996 (do I like using parentheses (i.e.: writing comments in brackets)? yes! (but it's the same as in programming: you always have to have the same number of opening and closing brackets!)))))

Sounds like a hideous virus if it can jump not just species but binary code!

Thanks for the concern. In case you were all worried the laptop if fine, but Bruno was told to go back to his Tech level 12 planet of black furry felines.

Not a Lovecat then.

A disturbing twist

more spookiness on my lastest trip.
- a zombie missile. it hanging in one places twisting and spinning like a cat w/ a broken back.
- a zombie ship has actively attacked me twice now - comes in shooting, but you can't shoot back as the game doesn't recognise it as a legit ship! that sucks!

It's just Oolite displaying a little of it's feminine side..... unpredictable, and volatile etc etc etc.

Not a fix as such, but by making the ASCII text more transparent those annoying messages aren't quite so distracting.

@CaptKev: Thank you :) That sounds interesting. How do you do it?
