I know that I am low tech, but could we set up a spam-only discussion at the top of the forums, and continue our enlightened discussion about our space game in another forum?

Sounds like a plan to me!
A "Spammer's Cove" that all spam posts are automatically moved to, so the rest of us can safely ignore them. (Or make verbal q-bomb runs on!

Unfortunately those bots don't necessarily pick the top forum or the top subject for that matter. See Anteenup's post here:
https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.php?p=25287#25287
I'm probably mid-tech, but my guess is that what really works is having visual confirmation on, so that bots can't make profiles, only allowing registered users to post and kick all recoqnized bots of the board.

Actually, I do moderating at trinity.neooffice.org and there we just delete obvious spam announcements from the fora altogether. And ban the IP adresses or subnets of repeat offenders. No need to keep a record of how many people want to sell us drugs or invite us to receive free money from Nigeria..
Around here, I'd suggest moving them to Outworld (the off-topic forum) for a start
. Of course, a spam forum will allow the bored to indulge in some verbal hit and run attacks.
Best wishes,
Oscar

It all well and good for you guys to dither about what to do about these spambots... I'm
still waiting for my giant owl!
