Oolite Bulletins

Just to add more fuel to the fire: Little Bear's Galactic Almanac uses the following names for the "Quadrants". These can be found in the description.plist of that OXZ. Not sure of the reason he chose to use these names but they are different from what has already been discussed. The specific word origins are all based on a variety of Mythologies with most being variations on the names of Constellations.

3. Capricorni
4. Draconis
5. Erebus
6. Serpentarius
7. Scorpius
8. Octantis
9. Sagittarii

I downloaded it from the OoliteStarter which gives the Download URL as https://wiki.alioth.net/img_auth.php/0/ ... es_1.0.oxz.

The file was installed in my ManagedAddOns folder as oolite.oxp.Wildeblood.galaxy_names.oxz.

I'm a bit concerned about all the different apparent folders and filenames, and I do not understand how the wiki source-file can apparently be renamed like that to two other, different sources, and everything still works anyway... I'm afraid that my ignorance might just result in more trouble than it's worth if I try to do anything by myself in uploading to the wiki. I'd rather pass it back to you, Wildeblood -- but I do not see anything that indicates that I can add it as an attachment here... Nor do I see an attachment facility when composing a new Private Message either. ... ?

Besides, with Nite Owl's new information coming to light, I'd rather wait a bit for any possibly other, further input, which might assist in updating the applicable history of how all three sets of names might tie together, possibly after a voting poll has been held.

You can't add an attachment here, in the "Discussion" forum, you can only add attachments in the "Expansion Pack" forum, which is why I pointed at that other topic.
When you're writing a reply, at the bottom of the screen, below the "save draft, preview, submit" line, there's an "options" tab. But when replying in the "Expansion Pack" forum, there'll be both "options" and "attachments" tabs. The forum won't accept file.OXZ, so leave it named file.zip to upload an attachment.

Apparently, the download manifest is re-compiled around the end of the month, so you've plenty of time to um and ar.

See what a difference punctuation makes? If I'd used a colon, instead of a full stop, I might have been clearer.

Hades
Acheron
Asphodel
Tartarus
Elysium

And if a 9th is needed: Olympus

On the plus side, it has a fairly consistent theme with a real world astronomical precedent (Greek myth); on the other, any other traces of such are largely absent in both classic elite and oolite itself.

It is however, what I'd be using over any of the others presented so far (albeit not necessarily in that order).

For more 'Elitey' names, the original planet name generator could be used if so desired. The planet Arse may have historically been rejected but it could yet return as a mighty galactic sector...

Then, in this thread, other suggestions were also offered, perhaps not so much based on consistent, if only vaguely-recalled, GalCop history (as recounted in previous posts above) as on personal preference for this Galaxy Names OXP.

No wonder it took so many decades of long-protracted debate in the GalCop Senate finally to ratify the translation of the ArcElite chart names into the indigenous tongues.

Besides, any LLaMa would be more than willing to "list some themes consisting of nine differently-named elements." Some examples: planets of the Old Solar System (if anyone still remembers those), colours (Red, Yellow, Green, Cyan, Blue, Magenta, White, Grey, Black), the Greek muses, the daughters of Zeus, essential nutrients, elements of fiction, types of energy, major Human religions, types of literature, etc.

Perhaps well enough should rather be left alone, and each Oolite pilot should edit their own Galaxy Names descriptions.plist according to their own preferences, justifications and reasons. Afterall, it is merely an OXP; OXPs are meant for editing. Unzip the Galaxy Names .oxz-file, change the chart names in the Config folder's descriptions.plist file, and re-zip the Galaxy Names folder. Perhaps the Oolite pilot might even use some of these above suggestions for inspiration.

However, for the sake of interest, let's try to have that long-promised voting poll in any case, and see what happens... It seems I'll have to create a separate post for that, and refer back to this thread.

Edit: It turns out I apparently "do not have appropriate permissions to create polls", as explained in app.php/help/faq#f2r3.

No, nothing has changed. You can only create a poll in the first post of a thread. I just checked and the poll creation functions are there when I edit the first post of a thread. I'll create one to confirm.

I have now tried again, but there is still only the "Options" "tab below the main posting form" (no "Poll creation" tab anywhere), when I try to follow the instructions in the FAQ (app.php/help/faq#f2r3).

Maybe I'm just too erratic and dangerous, and some powers-that-be decided it safer for the commOonity as a whole if I were disallowed any polling rights. Maybe they're right.

Or maybe the Witchspace Lobster just does not want things renamed? And will now curse you for all eternity!
