It was many years ago but I seem to remember I preferred the original BGS effects but modified it by adding textures from the later BGS - possibly the bgs_hyper.png texture.

To try and fix things with Library.oxp, go to the F4 screen while docked and scroll down to AddOns - Config for AddOns - select "list settings," and then select BGS.
It's worth mentioning that BGS 1.x isn't linked to Library. BGS 2.x is, but 1.x (I think) uses CCL. So no amount of fiddling with Library will make any difference to BGS 1.x.

Yes you are right, BGS 1.x does use CCL
