Mine:
This way I can fly with left hand only. (two hands for combat though)
I do wish that joysticks/pads could be used when docked.
I also really could use a ASC button, especially in dogfights.

Ha! A commerate in crime. pitch/yaw configuration rules!

Yup, especially for fine-aiming in combat, but tbh I use it when flying too. Combining Pitch/Yaw/Roll is most efficient imho.

You both should be punished by having to play the original Elite for 6 months!

Perhaps someone should make an OXP wherein all ships have yaw enabled?

Well, why not use yaw....
The pitch / roll comes from aerodynamic based flight mechanics. An aircraft turns by rolling, then the lift force points sideways, making the aircraft go sideways, while the force now pushing against the tail keeps the whole thing straight, effectively resulting in a turn. Yaw is used rarely in a turn, it is used e.g. in case of sidewind landings.
In space, you have no aerodynamics, you use directed thrust, which could induce a momentum around any axis, including yaw. So nothing's wrong with it, except it does not feel like flying in an aircraft (flight simulator).
Lacking Newtonian physics, flying a spaceship in Oolite will always feel a bit like cheating anyway.

FYI I have played the original Elite back in 1986 on my Amstrad 6128 when I was 10 year old.
I prolly played more than 6 months, though I do recall starting over again and again because I got killed all the time. Nothing changes I guess

From Oolite 1.81:
Code: Select all
"use strict";
this.name="noyaw";
this.startUpComplete = this.playerBoughtNewShip = function() {
player.ship.maxYaw = 0;
}
this.shipSpawned = function(ship) {
ship.maxYaw = 0;
}

I've played with Lego spaceships when there weren't even home computers around!

We used to have
Baufix. But we probably didn't build wooden spaceships... too many holes!
But we are starting to move slightly off-topic...

First;
Doesn't matter if there is no gravity out side your ship. As sood as you change it's direction, The Force shall be known. It will feel like gravity, body in motion and all that physics.
Look at a bucket of water swung on a rope, does it care for earths gravity?
Ask a F1 driver about the human body being made for high side way G force.
So yes banking into turns even makes sense in space, I know I'd prefer even centrifugal force pressing my bum into my seat and not across it.
OOps, sorry this topic was about joysticks;
I had an Attack 3 from 'add here'. Used every button till I wore them out. Lasted about a decade
Bought a stick, don't remember what, about 20 quid, only lasted a few months.
Now using the Extreme 3D PRO from 'add here'.
Again I use every button on it, Even the hat for view change. Only need the keyboard for in dock.
I have changed the 6 buttons on the bases' functions a few times, still not sure I'm happy with it yet, tis hardly been a year.
The 6 and hat on top are for armaments, view and fire
These things take a bit of time, besides it's still my first 3D pro stick.
I did play a helicopter game on a playstation years ago. I snapped the controller. It was pre toggle controls on them. Give you an idea how long ago. Really not built for adults frustration that chopper wasn't turning fast enough to avoid that ground to air barsteward. That game didn't say 'Press Space' Just 'You Died' No encouragment to try again there!
In short; Buy the best you can. Preferably with a steel base that you can bolt to the table. The X3D has big luggs that take G-clamps really well.
Wasn't game enough to drill holes in my table for proper bolts.

Hmm.. Yaw?? Isn't that what a hippos mouth does, Just before eating someone?
