I think, a flag should be easy to memorize and to draw, and should work as a relatively small icon too. That's the case for the French, the German, the Italian, the Netherlands and many other flags. The Union Jack is already quite difficult, the American flag too, and the current Australian flag is even more difficult.

Considering this, the second flag in the first post of this thread is my favourite. The stars in the first design are much too detailed and wouldn't be recognizable in a smaller version.
