I wonder how your new machine would cope with it...?
Hmm... my GTX 770 SC 2GB certainly has some grunt, so it might have coped. Of course, the 'universe full' problem would still apply.

I believe Smivs toned that explosion down somewhat for the release.

Also, the R5 is not one of the top performer cards (see here) and it could simply be FPS dropping due to too much happening.
Yup, probably. But the laptop was bought on a budget, so I have to make do! As an afterthought, could this card be replaced (at a later, more cash-rich, date) with any ease?

Didn't get on last night, due to ill offspring, so I'll give it a go tonight. Thank you all for the advice AND for running a site in which I approximate a "spring chicken"!

Don't worry - the Wizard that is Google shows I'm stuck with it. Never mind, I can turn the settings down; the machine was bought mainly for working on, anywho...

Sorry.. just not gonna happen, basically. With very few exceptions*, laptop graphics chips are soldered onto the motherboard, and the rest of the board is designed with that specific chip in mind. Just as with the crappy graphics in my own laptop, you're stuck with it.

*Laptops which actually use a proper separate graphics card do exist, but they are generally bulkier and heavier than typical laptops, are more expensive, and the cards must be custom-tailored for the laptop. Standard desktop cards won't fit. So the upgrade options tend to be limited.
