This is unfortunately the reverse of what I was looking for - I just want to hang around near the station and wait for someone to open a wormhole, so something that depends on jump drive is not going to help.

Haven't tried it, but logically it would make sense not to have the increase in time acceleration after the enemies are gone because the sudden increase would introduce wild turns that are a pain to correct. Best case scenario is you have one key you hold for 4x, and another key you hold for 16x. Forcing 1x when enemies are present wouldn't work either for me because I usually run from those enemies, at least at this point in the game.

There is no sudden increase, you must press "i" (Injectors) for 2x and "j" (Torus) for 16x.
I never wanted time compression when lasers dancing around. Even if you run you should use the rear laser to frighten enemies where the mentioned higher turning rates works against you when you try to aim in accelerated time.
