It's not the technology levels that are important, really, it's how rich or poor the economy is. A Poor Agricultural world sells the cheapest agricultural goods, and pays the highest prices for industrial products; a Rich Industrial world makes the cheapest industrial products, and pays the best for agricultural imports.
Correct, though lone wolf has the right idea about what commodities to trade in.

I saw advice that you want to sell goods to a system that they'd find most valuable... so, sell alloys and such to an Industry heavy system, etc. But that's not really yielding any kind of a payoff. I think I came out 3 "credits" ahead after selling it, and I haven't been able to find any kind of information on how to tell what system is likely to have a higher payout.
Time for the shameless OXP plugging to begin. Download an expansion pack called "AI Trading Assistant". Buy the Large Cargo Bay first, then buy the Trading Assistant AI as soon as you have 3000 credits to spare. Put it in full auto mode. Never look back.

Well, with the possible exception of the food.. (although it does come in handy as
Pirate Kibble)

In the original game most profit to be made involved buying as much food as you could afford on one of the planets near to Lave, then buying as much machinery as possible to trade back. Once you got to a full load of Wine and Computers you would be making a fair crack, so it was time to start beefing up your Mk3. Learning to Dock is harder than learning to fight back once you have some decent kit.
I've been using an older version of
this for a while with moderate success. I never have a joystick for either my BBC or Archimedes so always used the keyboard for the originals. Use the key mapper referred to earlier to find keys that work for you. Also find the key damping thingy (if it still exists?) which should should also help.

Another hint.... ROCK Hermits..... hard to find (except for rock hermit oxp) but have decent prices on radioactives and minerals. Fuel is outrageous. Sometimes will buy items at fair to good prices but that is kinda rare although I have sold furs for 80 credits/ton at one. Some like booze or drugs so they are a joy to work with.
Diziet Sma: "I'm sorry that happened to you, Sky Warrior.. on behalf of my fellow Commanders, I apologise. Hopefully the miscreant has since learned some manners."
You know what... it rolled off my back like water on a duck but I did learn to research my questions first.w

I use (under use since I only steer and fire my laser with it) the old Attack 3 stick.
I like to trade in gem stones, I buy them if they are under 18C/g, sell if over 20C/g
The game is a balance of simulation and arcade action so, yeah, slow progress while you garner coin. Quick death if you get in over your head.
Use the OXPs to develop your personal 'verse as you like. Maybe a few things like dockables; behemoths, some different space stations and dredgers to spice up the space lanes and add some new trade opportunities). Ambiance OXPs are a nice addition, Your Add Here is fun and the soothing voice of Hal's Sis make voyages less lonely...for me the game is 50% about eye candy. Pick a few OXP missions, Long Way Round is a straight forward and rewarding little job, Oohaul offers some good money for escort missions..
Later, once your combat status goes up a few stages add in Thargoid Wars and Galactic Navy, or add them sooner and run the chance of popping into a full scale battle.
Keep flying, have fun, buy low, sell high.
