Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

As for what should be in the tutorial - some thing which teaches you how to dodge laser fire!
I was never good at it, and now I've gotten so rusty I've been reduced to space dust thrice...

In a word, constant speed and direction changes, in 3 dimensions. Distance plays a big part too.. close-in dogfiighting is where it's at.
