My laptop has a Belgian AZERTY keyboard, to reach the numbers on the top row I need to press the "Shift" key. I tried that, but Oolite completely ignores the 1 to 8 keys on my keyboard, with or without pressing "Shift". The keypad numbers on the right (where I usually enter numbers in all other applications) also get ignored. I do need the Function Keys.
Ouch. Keycode fun.

There are programs available which can tell you the keycode for any key you press.. you could note them down and then add those values to keyconfig.plist directly, the same way the arrow and 'Home' keys are mapped.
Yep. We have also a small helper tool to create the mapping - [wiki]Keyconfig[/wiki].

@Gimbal Locke: Let me know if the tool needs some tweaks for you.
@Svengali: Thanks for your reply, but I already have a custom keyconfig.plist. The problem is that F1-F8 and 1-8 cannot be configured in keyconfig. Anyway, this is not a major problem, it does not prevent me from playing the game.

Please note, the F-Keys F1-F8 and Number-Keys 1-8 are used to show specific GUIs/Views and are hardcoded.

3. It's quite ok, since remapping 5-8 keys was one of my issues.

Thanks to all repliers!

1. As to the sound, thanks to your hints, I went to the sounds folder and kept playing laser.ogg and laserhit.ogg till I got the subtle difference.

2. As to the inertia, I've discovered that in the ZX Spectrum version of Elite, the rolling stops faster than pitching, which is the other way around in Oolite. I'm curious how it is in the BBC Elite (I'll try to see if I still have the BBC emulator).

I now have another question regarding the cross-hair, but I believe it's better to start a new topic on that.

Since February, according to when the Wiki page was created.

For Mac users, there's also the Oolite Key Mapper, which has been out since at least 2005.

Yes, Greyman very kindly gave me a copy of the source for Oolite Key Mapper, some time ago.. I was gonna try compiling it on REALbasic for Linux, but it turns out they want almost $100 for it, so I've just the other day installed Gambas 3.x. If I can successfully port the code across, I'll be able to generate binaries for both Linux and Windows with it.

Yep. I thought it is not necessary to create binaries - all we need is already there if these helper tools are using the browser...

The idea came when I was looking at maaarcooose OOLiteInfo.

The browser tool is a brilliant idea.. I almost gave up on the idea of creating binaries when I saw that..

However, for the sake of the practice, (my programming skills are really really rusty) and simply to have alternatives, and fulfil the long-held hope some have had to see the Key Mapper available on all platforms, I think I'll continue with it in my spare time. I have an idea that might extend its usefulness across many different keyboards as well, not just the US/UK versions.
