They end up in aquatic space, can't remember how it happens or which episode, but it has been done.
!m!
It was Fluidic Space, when they encounted Species 8472 (god I'm such a geek!). But in Star Trek Enterprise they had an Xindi Aquatic ship that was really cool, had water inside the the ship and the aliens swam around in it.

Haha basically, when I was younger I had two Star Trek Encyclopedia's and watched every apisode from The Original Series right through to Star Trek Voyager and even Enterprise. Also seen all the films, including the newest one. Quite sad I know, but there ya go...

I thought we'd all done that!

Actually I'm now watching all seasons of TNG.

Well at least I'm not alone!

and there are NO submarine sims for Linux.
If you compile Win UAE on your version of Linux you could play that very subsim (Subwar 2050) that I linked to earlier. Here, have a look here
http://www.amigaemulator.org/
You will need at least 3.0 Amiga ROM images though to play that game, but there are others that use earlier ROMs like 1.3 or 2.0, have a look on the Hall Of Light web site and to get you started have a look at Silent Service II
http://hol.abime.net/1924
If you cant find any ROMs, there is always Amiga Forever emulator, that also works on Linux although it is not free, it does come with many versions of ROM and gives you instant access to the Amiga's massive back catalogue of games

Bump this 3 years old topic.
(original idea on p1 of this thread)
Surely this idea coud now be possible with the scenario options of the new Oolite?
The way I can see this implemented is. Travel to Galaxy 3 planet Aqualina (need Aquatics oxp) and make planetfall. Then you would be transported to a surface port where the Ocean map is presented. And then you could travel to places on the map. Systems are now regions of interest and marked with a number which indicates the depth. Deeper = more dangerous but could give greater rewards.
The color of space could be used to indicate the depth around an underwater station. Colors could range from very light blue to pitch black.
Space dust could be made bubbles. etc.
Other way to implement is via the interfaces screen where a game setup as a sort of combat simulator could transport you to an underwater scenario.
Anyway I thought about this suggestion again today and it would be really cool to see if someone can come up with something like this. Basically a total conversion of Oolite to underwater. Name could be Oolite Escape to Aqualina or something like that.

Edited to add: changed thread title to that.

Applying colour to the current graphic engine and a little blur could work to simulate underwater travel

Up 'scope! Bearing is... mark! Range is... mark! Down 'scope! Flood tubes one and two!

Wow looks actually good (although I can see that it is now a filter only but good!)
This combined with bubbling noises and you can imagine traveling already underwater. Then add some special underwater stations and ships and a total conversion could be underway.

In this place the non-newtonian movement is natural, moreover a ballast equipment could add vertical movement.

Also different plating for traveling to different depths.
Maybe there could be the different depth zones but zone 1 should be accessible and leavable by Oolite ships.
——————
Zone 1:
Depth: Shallow depths.
Pressure: Pressure levels 0 - 1000 fathoms
Oolite Ships that can enter this zone unmodified:
- Morray starboat all variants
The following Aquatiics ships can enter the zone unmodified
- Manta Ray
- Conger
- Shark
Edited to add more randmom ideas:
Scenery in zone 1
Fishing farms
Port city stations
Equipment stations:
buoys
Industrial stations
Surface stations
Military stations
Port city stations
Safe junderwater stations that contain food, fish and shrimp farms or are full blown industrial production facilities that provide products and energy for stations in lower zones or export to Oolite space)
Market:
They import seafloor minerals, volcanic alloys, special fish and research materials from lower sea level stations.
Distribution:
Are situated at different depths from 1 to level 10 (10 is the deepest level in zone 1)
Stations at depth 1 are safer than level 10. Level 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 and probably 5 are frequently under siege by deep sea pirates and see monsters. Chance of this happening reduces with depth.
Equipment
They offer an equipment dock to modify Oolite ships for the lower levels
Also specialized subs could be bought here.
Port city stations differ in tech level so trade is possible between them.
Underwater Reefs (maybe a variant on astroids but with corals growing over them)
Suface station
Special port cities which contain launch facilities to Oolite space.
Civillian station
Small station who provide transport contracts to the more busy port city stations
Possible game mechanics:
Speed of all ships is halved
Exhaust plumes become bubbles
Bubbles and sound become detectable with sonar
Equipment to make your ship more silent?
Radar becomes sonar?
