When I started my commander almost 3 real life years ago I downgraded to an MK1 to quickly take advantage of a bigger purse and the upgrades. It was a nice fighting ship but earning moony proved difficult.
Second ship was the Starseeker Personal Shuttel:

I liked this ship to death. It was nimble and had a small profile so it was good enough for doing the first Random Hits.
Eventually traded up back to my Cobra Mk3. I have personal texture on it. No name yet.
Plan on upgrading to either a Monitor 1 or 2 (for cargo space) or a Cobra MK3XT.
Then the path to a Boa or a Boa clipper.

My first follw-up ship to the cobra mk III was the trusty old python. Good value for the money and a big cargo hold, perfect to start a career as a peaceful trader.
My commander flying the python is a pure trader, still rated harmless, has not a single kill yet and not got killed yet. Well, it´s very challenging to play the game as a peacenik, especially if you have installed the tough-guys and deep-space-pirates OXP.

The first ship I got after the Cobra MK3 was the Accipiter. I piloted that one through many feudal missions, completed the assassins missions with it and made it all the way to Elite ranking. I have a sentimental attachment to the Accipiter because of this. After the Accipiter I got hold of the Vortex and liked that one a lot. I got a Contractor for awhile and that was a fun ship to pilot but then went back to a Vortex and piloted that one for a long time. I recently got a Caduceus Omega, which is also a fine ship to pilot. I may go back to the Accipiter again one day for the sake of nostalgia.

Thanks to Switek's Shipping mod and the saves that come with it, I've been roaming Galaxy 1 in an Adder for six game months. Me and the 'Underdog' have made a name for ourselves as a capable all-rounder and I've made her about as iron-assed as you can get. There's a lot to be said for starting below the bottom and working your way up.
Anyway, I've made 85 kills and learned the art of fighting with only one energy bank and can't wait until I can upgrade, probably to a Moray.
Edit: Typo

I too have taken the Broke Adder start. I haven't taken it as far as you have yet. But it is fun and very satisfying to know that I have started the game from the absolute bottom all the way up to Elite with over six million in the account.

I was so happy to finally be back at a Cobra3, after all that Miner, Moray-Med and Python, but now I find it - errm - well - difficult to dock without scraping the docking tunnel
, mostly with rock hermits.
Even when I go all the way to the buoy and then to the RH.
dang!
I never knew that even a Python is easier to dock than a Cobra3.
Made me think that this is another point to the
Cobra3 is not the ideal ship to begin with, for a beginner opinion.
So, I am planning to stay with the Cobra3 at least until my cargo reputation is good, and until I got that Constrictor.
Then I am planning for a Moray Starboat - it is almost as good for fights as the Cobra3, but considerably smaller - so more difficult to hit, and no more trouble docking.
hehe, that's a cute word. thanks for making me know.

I recently upgreded to a Moray Star Boat. Me and the "Flathead" have had some success, mainly with escort contracts. Despite being slower than the Cobra III and having a small cargo hold, I find the handling to be excelent. I do well in combat despite only having a forward laser, and seven tons is usually enough to clear up after a fight with pirates. I'm thinking of writing a review for What Starship magazine, if it gets off the ground.

mine in this incarnation of Oolite was the Blue racer
pretty good speed, decent cargo space and good manouverability...... in an insane galaxy, it was the only insane choice, whoops shouldn't that be sane.... lol

Interestingly, it is possible to achieve the highest cargo carrying reputation with only a maximum size of 50T. Less than that I don't think I could do it, but with a bit of luck, I've managed it with 50.
I can well believe that, although most of the cargo jobs I've seen require a bit more than that, up to around the 125-200CT ballpark, if not more.
It
IS possible to achieve the highest cargo reputation in a Cobby MkIII with a cargo extension..
I've done it, just in this last week, when starting over with a new game.. you'll have to hunt around a lot more to find contracts in the 30-35TC range, but they
are out there.. My approach is to use fuel stations and sun-skim like crazy.. I don't dock (except for emergencies) until I arrive at my destination. If I have the room, I buy a few more TC of the cargo in question, as it has a nasty tendency to get destroyed in combat, (it's rather embarrassing when you arrive without enough cargo to complete the contract) though I do my best to avoid fights when contract hauling.
(Hint: If you
do manage to arrive without enough cargo to fulfill the contract, immediately buy the missing cargo on the open market, launch and re-dock, and your contract will complete successfully)
The only other catch to doing it in a Cobby is, even when you do start to get the juicy gold/platinum/gems contracts, you probably won't have enough Cr yet to bid on the bigger paying jobs for a while, but it doesn't take too long to build up some decent cash reserves.. especially when you can land 2-3 smaller gold/platinum/gems contracts heading in the same general direction.. (being obsessive about using the fastest route helps here)

Also getting an extra passenger berth will help, once you've built up a reputation they'll pay more and more!

Well the fist one after MK3 was benny the Python, sharp teeth on that. Big white and square, but flew well. Made a heap of creds with him.
Traded in for a super Cobby only 6Mil and a bit Cr. Then I seen her.. Caddy Mk OMG. Had to have her, took on many deadly missions, got the Cr's And bought her..
Stepping into Gertty for the firdt time was like...
Well she fired up and took off.
Picking a ship is having a ship pick you.
The Ooniverse is huge

hehe - I do it exactly the other way around : I dock with every main station there is, to find as many =/< 35t contracts in short time as possible.

Hehehe.. maybe I should have been clearer.. when searching for small contracts, yes, I dock at every station.. but once a contract is found and the cargo loaded up, there's no point.. there isn't room for any more cargo, and the clock is a'tickin'.. flying to every station en-route and docking just wastes in-game time.. so best get that load of Riedquatian Evil Juice to its destination as quickly as possible, and then off to find another cargo.
