My 'main' commander flies a Boa Clipper - easily one of the best all-rounders without getting into uber/silly territory, and it fits in comfortably with the core set. It's 'parent' the Boa Class cruiser is the best bet from the core set. This commander has over 4000 kills now although racking up kills is not a priority.
Having said that, a few months ago I started a new 'Jameson' who flies a custom paintjob Cobra 3. My aim with this chap is to get to Elite with the Cobby 3 and without any OXPs except for eye candy. Getting to Elite with an OXP ship and 'non-Elite' equipment is pointless in my view. Staying 'vanilla' is the only way it will actually mean anything to me. And anyway I came to Oolite because I loved Elite and that means it has to be a Cobby 3.
For testing (which is actually what I've mostly been doing for the last year plus) it's a Contractor. Mostly for the speed as it is simply more time-efficient.
