It's quite easily explained with the old Handwavium, and a massive dose of some highly experimental psyco-active brain enhancers that are injected direct into the pilots spinal cord, doubling the speed of his brain activity, resulting in the strange experience of everything appearing to move in slow motion.
Oh, you mean it's a heroin rush, or maybe LSD?

I would say speed.
But don't ask why I would know that!

Is that like quayludes, or something. Not that I know what any of it is, mind you.

I'm not sure I understand that, but what else is new, LOL!!!
TAF currently accelerates everything the game does - this includes response the joystick/keyboard movements - so at 16x TAF a pull back on the joystick that lasts only 1/16th of a second is the equivalent of pulling back on the stick for a full second - and hence the very twitchy flight profile.
Ahruman's plan was, for the control inputs, remove this from the effect of TAF, therefore at 16x TAF (or any other), you could still manoeuvre as "normal".
Alas, with Ahruman's departure, unless one of the Devs wishes to carry this plan on, it's not to be...

No, no, no, the opposite in fact.
Brain
enhancers, that speed up your brain, resulting in everything
except your brain appearing to run at half speed.

heroin would be when you speed TAF up the other way, like everyone else is moving soooo quiiickly.... man
LSD would be the new BGS hyperspace!
Slomo super battles are only any good when you're hopelessly out numbered though, not for general usage.
The long term side effects haven't been properly researched!
Anyway, moving swiftly on - isn't one of the DEVs a judge or something?

Hmm, you seem to speak with some authority on this matter. First hand experience, or just technical knowledge?

Not meaning to sound dense, or get too personal, but why did Ahruman leave? I didn't know he wasn't involved anymore.

He hasn't left, he's just stepped back from being head honcho of the dev team - the same thing has happened to Ahruman as happened to Giles before him - you can only eat, sleep, breath Oolite code for so long before it eats you up and you need to step back to save yourself.
