In Oolite I am above average but I don't count it as a real rating as I have died in ways that to my mind count as a real Oolite death (playtesting dontcherknow).
I made elite on the beeb, C-64, amiga and atari ST elites but out of those only the C-64 version was really done without gratuitous time travel.
I used to be a fanatic about that kind of thing but I'm too old for that now, I embarrased myself the other day by joyfully proclaiming how I could clock defender and then getting the crap shot out of me on a friends emulator..... Well THE KEYS WERE DIFFERENT.......
Bah, you've fired me up now. I am going to start a new commander... yes... and he will live to deserve his elite rating.... yes... and if he dies he will be consigned to oblivion like the wuss he is yes... and from his ashes shall arise a grandson to avenge him... yes...... <note to self. get more sleep>

I completed my first mission in galaxy 2 and went from competent to dangerous in one swoop, from around combat rating 350 to exactly 600.

I'm pretty sure I made 'Elite' status on one of the Commodore (C64 or C128) versions. I recall seeing a full-screen graphic of a dude dressed up in a flight suit, with his hand extended, holding (handing out to you) a ELITE badge.
Now, although it is true that I played Elite rather obsessively when The C64/C128 were "current" platforms, I'm pretty sure that I did NOT amass 6000+ kills. Were I to hazard a guess, I'd say I had made somewhere between 1000-1500.
In Oolite, my best commander ("Sarge2") is presently in Galaxy 2 and has amassed 744 kills, although some 200 or so of those were "awarded" kills for completing the Constrictor mission. I think I might have missed one of the major (kill-award) missions in Galaxy 1, I'm not sure...All I know is that the Constrictor mission is the only "major" mission that I've completed.

I want to know, what are exactly the scores one has to get to the different ranks in Oolite? IIRC there are some differences between the various *lites around...
I'm asking this because I thought going over 1023 kills made you deadly, but I was mistaken, I'm still Dangerous,
so it isn't 2^x? 2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512,1024,2048,4096? It skips a step?

For your edification:
Code: Select all
- (int) getRatingFromKills: (int)shipKills
{
int rating = 0;
int kills[8] = { 0x0008, 0x0010, 0x0020, 0x0040, 0x0080, 0x0200, 0x0A00, 0x1900 };
while ((rating < 8)&&(kills[rating] <= shipKills))
{
rating ++;
}
return rating;
}
Translated to decimal, that’s 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 512, 2560, 6400.

Asteroids used to count, at one time, back in the day (as well as being worth ten times what they are, now, to 'kill'). Those were the days...

I can just remember the day I finally made ELITE on my Spectrum.
I had almost given up hope of ever making it to ELITE it seemed to take so long, then I jumped into a system swarming with pirates - there were 20+ bogeys all over the place - most unusual, normally they came in boringly predictable 2s and 4s quartered on the compass, with the odd extra group - but this time was a real melee, just like being in the middle of a flight of Thargoids in Oolite.
After a manic battle, I was feeling pleased with myself at having just survived, then up came that familiar phrase, "Right On, Commander!"
...then, to my utter amazement, I discovered I was ELITE!
I remember rising to my feet and shouting ... "YYYYYEEEEEESSSSSS!!"
...shame it was 03:30 in the morning...

Ah, I didn't know Frontier rated too.
I voted deadly, because that was my highest on the C64.
Still a kid back then.
Later I attained Elite multiple times in Frontier.
The teens/highschool years.
I only got FFE working a year ago, so I never really tried it, because soon after Oolite was discovered.
Right now I'm competent in Oolite after a few nights pillaging.

Heh, yeah, 10cr. *and* a kill... One of the reasons I started over again when that was corrected. I used to shoot up asteroids for a living, when starting out, because they were such easy money
(And then again, not so long ago, because I reformatted the wrong drive
)

Even
splinters were kills, back then!
I had the red guy with the pitchfork on one shoulder and the little white chap with the wings on the other, going:
"Kill the splinter!"
"Scoop the splinter!"
"Don't listen to him! It's a kill! They're only paying 12.1 credits for those things at the station! Open fire, let's
kill the creep!"
IIRC you even got a kill when destroying cargo pods during botched scoop attempts

My highest ranking commander is my current one in Oolite, rated "Dangerous" and just about to break the 1400 mark. I'm close to the end of a thorough sweep of Galaxy 2, got a galactic hyperdrive and about 300,000 in the bank, ready "to boldly go" into Galaxy 3.
