The tips so far in this thread are really good, I wish I had asked that question before. I was one of those "Jump right in to the game and don't read the manual" type of players. I just pressed buttons at random to see what they did. So, I took on all the powerful ships and died almost every time. Don't do it. It's not worth it.
I think asteroids are good targets, they'll even pay for your fuel if you get enough. Just find a planet with an asteroid problem, like Leesti, and start mining. You'll be a good shot in no time.

I need to remember to get a mining laser.

Mount it aft and starboard...you'll get the most use of it there.

Can't mount one on aft. I need my aft Military laser for combat. But port and/or starboard will do very nicely.

No, no, no! Mount a mil laser aft. Pick off enemies as they blindly follow you. Mining laser on one side is ample.

Mount the mining laser PORT and starboard. Leave fore and aft as mil. >.<

Going to go buy them now. I'll be back on the BB in a bit.

You only need one mining laser, so pick port or starboard, then stick a mill laser on the other side. Eventually you'll get good enough with the side lasers to start taking out ships at full speed. Use of yaw is recommend.

How about an adjustable crosshair? Try my numeric hud. The link is in my signature.

Man, I wish there were some way to have cycling lasers...press "N" to switch between a mil and mining laser on the fore. Hmmm.
