It took me three attempts, over more than a month, to create a board membership here. That's not three attempts to solve the dopey captcha, I mean on two occasions I decided to sign up, got as far as the captcha, and thought "---- you" and decided not to bother. I hate those things with a passion.

I agree. I think ReCAPTCHAs are horrible. One of the few reasons I hate Google is because their captchas are the worst.
I think the Assassins can keep things under control. They are very effective anti-spam protection, and they do an awesome job.

a suggestion somone made on anotehr board:
put an input field on the form, but hide it. that way, a user can't fill it, but a bot reading the html source can see it and will fill it in, esp if marked mandatory.
if the field is empty, it's a user, if not, it's a bot.

Maintaining phpBB is enough of a pain without customizing it.

Thanks - it was getting... consuming...
Of course, if this is just a general trend of Spamminess increasing then after a revaluation period we can possibly turn it off again...
