The spammers are getting past the recaptcha, but it seems some potential new members aren't, so at the moment I'd say leave it disabled.
It took me three attempts, over more than a month, to create a board membership here. That's not three attempts to solve the dopey captcha, I mean on two occasions I decided to sign up, got as far as the captcha, and thought "---- you" and decided not to bother. I hate those things with a passion.

I agree. I think ReCAPTCHAs are horrible. One of the few reasons I hate Google is because their captchas are the worst.
I think the Assassins can keep things under control. They are very effective anti-spam protection, and they do an awesome job.

OK, frobbing it back for counter-re-post-evalumification.

a suggestion somone made on anotehr board:

put an input field on the form, but hide it. that way, a user can't fill it, but a bot reading the html source can see it and will fill it in, esp if marked mandatory.

if the field is empty, it's a user, if not, it's a bot.

Maintaining phpBB is enough of a pain without customizing it.

I know what you mean, Ahruman. I have a phpBB forum so I can learn to manage one.

Thanks - it was getting... consuming...

Of course, if this is just a general trend of Spamminess increasing then after a revaluation period we can possibly turn it off again...
