Hello, Jamesondwich!

Also: someone in this thread, I think, was a fan of 'low-poly' graphics. In that case, my 'Fer-de-Lance 3G' OXP might interest. For, it has interesting (ahem: crap!) graphics!

For those after low poly graphics, see the older ships listed here (https://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Category:Ships) and here (https://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Category:Ships_OXPs) - and there are lots of up-to-date ones by Murgh ([EliteWiki] Iron Ass OXP).

Hi, I'm ol' Murgh, popping by for old times' sake, re-introducing myself..

May you all be as well as one could reasonably expect.

Thanks, Murgh.

Welcome back!

Hoping you enjoy your stay. May it be a long and happy one.

Tell us some stories of the old days, and the start of Oolite; anything and everything that comes to mind. :D

Murgh! I've got two of your OXPs installed - nuVipers and Military Fiasco. I use the ships in Fiasco for some of the interstellar pirates (sic) in my Interstellar Tweaks OXP. To adapt something someone said about one of the ships I created in my Extra Thargoids: those multi-front-laser ships are really annoying; well done!

How were the Aurora - they should have been really impressive up in your neck of the woods...

Major changes since your last incarnation seem to be mostly Phkb's - his rejigged [EliteWiki] Planetfall2 OXP (a major work of work) and updates to a zillion-and-one OXPS including [EliteWiki] Cataclysm.

Famous Planets was updated for G1 & PlanetFall2. And Krager has been translating everything into Russian. Wildeblood returned for a spell and produced updates and a batch of new OXPs - a new retro-encabulator and various OXPs creating a more dynamic Ooniverse. And various others have contributed, too.

And it really warms the heart that those play-projects from so long ago can still contribute to amusement and continued creativity.

They's awesome but I keep missing them from my south-facing window.

Thanks for the update, Ill take some time to absorb. That's a spectacular image.

I'm instantly drawn to think about how it began for me, simply googling to find anything cool connected to my childhood fav game Elite some time mid 2004. By fantastic luck, seeing that a skilful gentleman named Aegidian had just recently started on his marathon creation, he was completely open about his progress, and releasing little update patches weekly(!) for people to playtest.

Courteous and with an advanced sense of humour, he was engaging with anyone interested, open to ideas and suggestions, from the very beginning making it with the intent that players could also easily add and mod, and he patiently taught us how to get into it, some of us like me with nil programming skills.

They were a couple of really fun years. The [EliteWiki] Aegidian devlog gives a good impression of how much happened in how short a time..

Thanks, Murgh.

Yes. I've worked through Aegidian's DevLog, and plan on returning to it someday for further study. It certainly is a fantastic read. Highly recommendable for anyone interested in the background and history of the place where our imaginations spend so much time. Thank you for capturing and uploading it to the wiki when the original LiveJournal seemed to become less accessible. Backups of backups, especially in today's interwebz, seems a good idea.

Your BB signature mentions that Jonny Cuba made you do it. He was also one of the first Ooliters -- if not the first, after Aegidian himself, of course -- and created the Oolite intro theme. I'd be rather interested in (1) your relationship to Jonny Cuba, and (2) what he made you do?

Thanks again. <o

It's great that you think so. For a long while, checking that journal was such a fun daily ritual, and even after Giles stepped back it remained very useful and entertaining. It was sad to see disappearing media and difficult navigation in Livejournal, so it felt important to salvage what I could with the wayback machine.

Yes! That is how it continues. The myth states that the first playtester was Nigel NoSleep, and the second his RL friend Jonnycuba. Both musicians, but the Oolite theme is by NoSleep. Jonnycuba however composed the brilliant and haunting TwinPeaksesque hOopy score that is hopefully still possible to hear upon visiting a casino..

The community was great, I soon realised, as may be the case when different people gather knowing that they have a great affection for something in common. Many nice characters, but Jonny had a particular cool way about him, and an ability to persuade me to try to start projects I didn't initially know how to do. Also, a great guy in person whom I met when he and his cool wife generously put me up once, midway on a long transatlantic journey.

Mostly he spurred me on to do the Boyracer (his name) and the early Torus work, -all the other racing stuff that didn't really materialise. And the Military Fiasco mission, and all the complicated hOopy casino stuff. I would have been a regular lazy player without him in my ear.

Dear all

Murgh's most recent message - i.e. the one immediately above this one - concluded with two images, which showed on my machine (and here, for once, my silly username might be of use) as something like 'content not available in your region'. So, I switched my VPN to the USA, reloaded, did a screenshot, and, as my neighbours the French would say, voilà:

Thanks, I wouldn't have guessed that my Imgur hosted pics uploaded from Norway would be invisible in UK.

Great info, Murgh!

Thanks for setting my record straight regarding the Oolite theme's composer having been Nigel NoSleep. ...and thanks for listening to Jonnycuba's promptings.

...

Would you perhaps, one day... be interested in adding some annotations to the Aegidian Devlog posts on the Oolite wiki, regarding your personal memories and experiences of when you first read those posts in Aegidian's LiveJournal way back in the early 2000s?... (just a thought... I, for one, would love to read such first-hand insights from someone who was actually there when it happened. ...just a thought. ...perhaps a separate wiki-page might be appropriate, and perhaps other original contributors and spectators from that time might also want to add their perspectives as well. ...just a thought.)

Thanks again, Murgh. :D

That might be fun to add a little colour and outside viewer context, something like little sideboxes Old Murgh reminisces:. Maybe some of the other old dogs eventually step by and we could add a varied collection of those. I don’t think my memory is good enough to carry an own page like that, but snippets that underscore, for instance, the player impact of a particular development, -or the utter joy of having one’s Trumble suggestion approved by Giles, might add some amusing flesh to the diary.

Wildeblood returned for a spell.
The rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Although, Westpac made a serious attempt to un-person me, resulting in the loss of the phone number I've had for a decade, and my neighbours - literally - bringing me food for fear I might starve. Anyway, I'm just passing through; I hope everyone is well, and I will return after Christmas. :D
