Excellent idea! There are a couple of other topics coming up quite frequently, usually as newbie questions, that are answered "from scratch" everytime.

So, who's going to do it?
Anyone and everyone

Everybody, of course! :D
I've added a page on the Wiki (see the Sticky at the top of the Discussion forum) which any one can add to. I've also added it to the Instruction Manual, so all noob Ooliteers (or is that NOobliteers?) can have their burning questions answered.

Thanks a lot! I hadn't seen the sticky when I posted here.

I do however see one problem: It seems that a lot of people don't turn to the wiki before posting their questions here. So FAQs on the wiki won't help them. We would need them here on the board.

...which is why we have the aforementioned sticky.

Also, being able to close a repeat thread by referring to the appropriate Frequenty Given Answer is useful in itself.

I see definetly very serious issues to get a real MMORPG with Elite. However, there are some possibilities which could be investigated to make Elite more interactive.
I see Elite as a game with 2 phases :
1/ The 3D space travel and fight
2/ The trading/refurbishing phase at the space station
I guess the code should follow more or less this logic
Within phase 2, we have different options to consult the inventory, trade, choose an itinerary, examine a planet etc... Knowing we are a space station x on galaxy y, it should be possible to open a chat room restricting the access to users connected to this space station. There it should be possible to trade items, equipment (shields, weapon, ships) and consumables (missiles, fuel) and discuss.
I know this is a poor man MMORPG but it is better than nothing.

The building block approach

That sounds like the best approach.

Maybe start with the 3D space travel on one planet and a limited amount of players. Once all problems have been over come then you can expand on that.

Elite multiplayer under development

There is already a version of elite multiplayer being developed by edzup

http://www.edzup.co.uk/elitemultiplayer.html
The graphics are not the same standard.

Any details on this? Maybe a link?

Just type edzup in google, that's all I did, it looks like he's got several games on the go all at the same time!

Having several games on the go is not hard. Making one of them releaseworthy is. :-)

Arhuman,
I agree with you 100%.
Do you think it is possible to include a chat client as a module of Elite which could be activated when landing at a space station. The chat will open a windows showing the people present at this station and will allow trading, file sharing limited to oxp (exchanging or why not selling oxp) and chatting.
I dont care much about edzup, I want an Elite with correct graphics and extensions. The bold lines of the projects could be :
1/ We should see the feasability of the project with Arhuman and other programmers
2/ Define the exact specs of this multiplayer chat room.
3/ Find a free chat client/code of chat client that answers the specs
4/ Include this in Elite and test beta.

I hope you mean 'selling' in a virtual sense, not a real-world transaction.

I think the best way to commuicate is voip as this would help to combat a common enemy in flight. And text messaging when docked as speed is not as important.

Captain Hesperus, yes, obviously, virtual credit.
pmhunt, I think the option of multiplayer in 3D flight/fight phase is still too early to envisage, if I follow a bit what I read in this thread.

Possible? Yes. Gonna happen? Not from me. (Also, who’d host the server?)
