I'm personally not particularly concerned whether we get it or not (solutions are in place, switching back itself would be a minor hassle)
yeah... at the moment (IMHO) there is simply not enough time for development, and the technical resources are all available...
oolite.org just is our history...
arquebus wrote: ↑Wed May 10, 2023 4:27 pm
but I do have to wonder if there's a way to know if one of "us" has the (current) high bid.
maybe someone confesses, I have no bids there )
Of course, if the community acted as one, it would be possible to make a high bid,
but really don't want to feed the f@$%n cybersquatters...

Gentlemen!
and any ladies who might be out there!
What do we wish to do about this auction?
I can see three options.
Option 1: Let the bidding proceed and accept the eventual loss of our website address.
Option 2: Buy it back
Option 3: Buy it back just for one year which we use to redirect everything to Timer's new "Oolite.space" site.
Issues
• Feeding the cybersquatters (argument for option 1)
• All the old links dotted around the web which proclaim oolite.org as our download site (only wikipedia has so far been corrected: argument against option 1)
• Correcting older already downloaded versions of Oolite's Expansions Manager to the new site (how many thousands are out there? argument against option 1)
• Correcting the link on the current downloadable versions of Oolite v.1.90 (has this already been done? I presume from Arquebus that this might not be the case)
I'm perfectly happy to contribute to buying back oolite.org if that becomes our consensus.

I did not place a bid yet but set an alarm for the current end of auction so I can. I don’t trust these domain bidding platforms enough to already now disclose interest by placing a bid early.

Quite.
If it comes to 'us' making a bid then I'd chip in. I'm not committing to an amount but it'd be something.

How could we achieve pooling?

Ok, one way or another we will try to buy our domain )
We need to decide - how much TOTAL we are ready to give to cybersquatters (reasonable limits) ...
Making bets individually is not very effective. The most obvious option: everyone who wants to take part - transfers to one person on the card, and he makes a bet - but this is probably difficult to implement, because everyone has different banks and countries.
Another option - someone buys within the maximum amount that he himself determines (as reasonable), and then those who wish to compensate (then there will be time to find a way to transfer) part of the expenses for him ... or not
If there is someone among us who does not have such a difficult path as me (through friends),
and he is full of enthusiasm - welcome )
waiting - what will happen, maybe in a week the rates will be $1000+
We still have time to discuss...

Personal view: a contribution yes, feeding cybersquatters no!

My personal opinion is the upper reasonable limit is $300 anyway
Sorry, I wouldn't go anywhere near that (even collectively) unless it were 30+ of us

If someone wanted to research likely interest then this board might be an obvious target, meaning that anything we type here...

This appears to be true, right?
Do we really need a .org?
.space is fine (.game might have been nice).

So it's agreed: we definitely won't be bidding then!

Actually there is a really interesting commit
https://github.com/OoliteProject/oolite ... 0255433d46
which has already made it into the prerelease version
https://github.com/OoliteProject/oolite ... tag/latest
So it would be up to users to test and enjoy.

The timestamps of those bids are interesting. Someone really wants it - and personally, I think they can have it!

I totally agree, yet feel a bit sad that a number of email addresses actually end with "@oolite.org". They will all be void now, if they ever existed.
