VERY different. It is very pretty but until the final or gamma release comes out its not going to be a proper game experience. And even then it's still missing that charm Oolite has, that homegrown feel that someone put their heart and soul into. But FD have done an okay job so I'll give them that at least. But it's still there to make money at the end of the day... Oolite was made to entertain and enjoy and nothing else!pagroove wrote:It looks very nice but in my opinion it is a different game than Oolite.

I do believe this is this games saving grace. You can happily sod off to the stars and not have to deal with people if you don't want too.
Unless I'm getting my facts wrong of course.

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

I can see the awards ceremony now:
And this years Elite Dangerous; James Bowie award for interpersonal skills and communal living goes too....
Mr Angus!
"I'm only here for the cake! Stay the hell away from me you bunch of thieving backstabbing weasels! Come near my asteroids and I'll skin ya to make me some replacement human leather y-fronts!"
Simple joys.

It is actually pretty solid gameplay, despite being in the beta. In the time I've had it (something like 130 hours cumulative gameplay time), it has crashed once, and that bug was immediately solved.

Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous
So what do you like or dislike about ED so far?
From watching a lot of let's plays (do not have access myself as I am waiting for a Mac version)
For me:
Likes:
Stars = Gotta love those plasma arcs .
Planet and star maps
Stations
Planets and lighting
Dislikes
Going from supercruise to normal still is a weird effect in the sense that objects appear instantly. (Unless supercruise is some other space/time dimension) but I still don't like the transition.
Docking should have some traffic control like in Oolite. It seems a bit of a free ride though the docking gate as it stands now.
Oolite has a better Aegis in my opinion.
This is of course an in between conclusion.

I must admit I was surprised by how small the "no fire" zone around Stations is.. the docking chaos, on the other hand.. I could go either way on that one.pagroove wrote:Oolite has a better Aegis in my opinion.
And yep, the transition out of supercruise is kinda jarring.

Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous
I've hardly watched any vids, nor read any tutorials - I wanted to see how it felt straight out of the box, so to speak. I had my first brief session only yesterday - the first tutorial (launching/docking) - just to have a quick look-see. I jumped into the ship and just hit launch - much as I did thirty years ago. Rather good, it was, and the flight model felt almost natural, instinctive - I sailed through it with flying colours! The game has massive potential!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous
I think it is indeed the best method to try it yourself. Sadly I have to wait till months after the release. I do not have a 2014 spec pc system. But my observations are mostly positive. With the points that I have mentioned I mean just points that need some polish.

Yep Supercruise looks at this moment as if it takes place in another dimension.Diziet Sma wrote:I must admit I was surprised by how small the "no fire" zone around Stations is.. the docking chaos, on the other hand.. That it does.. my brief two-days taste of Beta2 has left me itching to build a machine to run it on..Cody wrote:The game has massive potential!

I think the lore/tech is that of folding space, rather than travelling through it - so that may fit (or it may be improved).pagroove wrote:Supercruise looks at this moment as if it takes place in another dimension.

Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous
The big question is will we play Oolite still? I will for a while I am now nearly Deadly. I will become Elite on this game. I play with the same commander since 2006.

Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous
You bet we will.. as several threads discussing this have demonstrated.. besides which, Oolite on a gaming-beast that can run E:D should be pretty damn awesome.. Cody should be able to comment on that, now he has his new machine up and running.pagroove wrote:The big question is will we play Oolite still?
