Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous
Nothing new to add here other than I just purchased, downloaded and installed my Beta copy of ED (yes I'm a late adopter). It's looking fantastic on my rig (a 3 year old Alienware M17X R3, 4 x i7, 16GB RAM and SSD), as far as I can tell, the gfx are all cranked up to High.
Still working through the solo missions, haven't been killed yet (although I've only had an hour's play time so far). Finding that the Sidewinder is a bit of a slow turning ship, but on the other hand, my Oolite flying experience has put me in good stead for the flight model.
gotta say, I had my doubts early on that this game would see the light of day, but boy am I glad that it has.
One dilemma though: while this was downloading and installing, I fired up Oolite 1.80 and tweaked the joystick settings. Damn it! My Boa Class Cruiser is now tweaked beautifully for sniping (which is admittedly my preferred way of taking out enemies). There are no longer enough hours in a day to scratch both itches.
Compound this with the fact that I've been slipping over to the dark side of Oolite again - I wanted to get my one and only OXP verified to be working against 1.80, and it's given me the impetus to work once again on my other OXP idea. Arrggh!! Too much to do.

According to Michael Brookes, there is more work than usual for releasing the Beta, so expect release later tonight.

Another beta hotfix, as someone said:

Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous
Had a bit of a go at this over the weekend, struggling really badly with the combat can't hit anything other than the cargo canisters in the first training mission! haven't ventured out in online multiplayer mode yet, just been pottering about in Solo group mode but the game has been really stable and runs fairly well on 'high' on my GTX460 video card with a bit of stuttery when looking at something big and texturey like a space station or something.
If anyone else has just started out and is wondering about the trading map, here's a decent video that shows some of the view filtering options and how they can help you make a decent guess at what might net you a profit

Shock! Horror! Space is blue! I've gotta laugh!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous
Whoo! Finally got the Beta for Elite Dangerous. At first, I was worried it wouldn't run on my machine. But somehow I've managed to convince it to run smoothly on my laptop (Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3317U CPU @ 1.70GHz, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 620M 1GB). Of course I've had to lower the graphics but it's certainly playable and still looks good. Will have to upgrade at some point, but with another little one on the way it's going to be hard justifying the cost!
Docking/Landing took a short while to get the hang of but now it's becoming very easy. Just made some nice trades, so hopefully Cmdr Pleb is going to be flying that Eagle in no time!

You can get access to the Beta now if you pay £50.00 and this will also get you a digital copy of the game when it comes out. It is a bit expensive but I justified it to myself as money well spent (and I was annoyed I didn't have any money when the Kickstarter project was going on, otherwise I would have donated some then).mossfoot wrote:Can't wait to try this out myself eventually

Re: David Braben's Elite: Dangerous
I have a similar setup to you (well i7 CPU and GT 635M), but I'm having lots of troubles with FPS in ED. Often only 10-15 FPS when in stations, which is making docking problematic. What FPS are you getting?Pleb wrote:Whoo! Finally got the Beta for Elite Dangerous. At first, I was worried it wouldn't run on my machine. What settings are you running at? Resolution? ED settings??
